.. I have no idea if you're aware of this but it's just made my testing much less painful.

Genymotion uses virtualbox to run a virtualized android instance - ie not an emulated one that runs pig slow but a smooth fast running instance.

Can, obviously be used to do presentations or demos of your applications too.

The only downside is that it's only useful for testing systems with android >=4

You can run it natively on a laptop with the x86 project too. It gives a new use for to an outdated netbook/laptop, making it worth keeping.

I love doing my testing on real hardware devices because it's so smooth and quick. Obviously that's not always a viable option though. Thumbs Down

I currently use Eclipse with the Android plugins.

I've been meaning to try out the new Android Studio, but I finished all of my Android projects for the moment and have other work to be doing: https://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/studio.html

Same here Eclipse with he android plugins, it's a bit quirky sometimes but once you've sussed out the minor things it's fine.

I have been tempted to try IntelliJ IDEA (as android studio) and am interested in the Gradle build system too but all these things take time and they take it from development. Although I'm more interested in the Gradle system because you can have different flavours from the same code, ie to build a free version and a paid version from the same source.

I have it installed on the laptop:

However it seems rather counter intuitive to navigate around (maybe that's just me), so it seems like it's something that you will actually have to sit down and read up on to use it to its full potential.
