Shaft and belt bikes

If been reading old forum posts and around the Internet on chain vs belt vs shaft, and while there seems to be a lot of love for belt and shaft, there are few bikes that aren't chain.

I just wonder what everyone's favourite non-chain bikes are.

I like nowhere elysium's gs650, and was hoping to see it in the metal the other month, but it was poorly. I also like the look of the smaller kawasaki gt550. fwtw. *shrugs*

I've had a lot of shaft drive bikes, a Kwak GT750, various Goldwings, 900 Divvy, Tiger explorer and Trophy to name some off the top of my head.

For a touring bike you can't beat shaft but of course you get a power loss much higher than a chain so you won't get it on sports bikes.

I've never had a belt drive but people who have swear by them. I gather they are pricy to replace though.

My two present bikes are single sided swingarm shaft drive. easy to get the wheel off and no adjustment needed.

Hard to say. Belt pulleys don't wear out like sprockets, but a belt can be damaged and let go at any time. I say can, everyone knows someone whose mate's cousin's mechanic's uncle...

I'd have another belt in an instant, I wish more bikes came with them.

I like the belt of my Savage, but preferred the shaft of my XJ900, GT550 and R100RT.

Honda ST1100 Pan european.

With probably 300,000 miles on these in the last 5 years and I've never been left on the side of the road with broken shaft parts.

I've had issues of course but nothing catastrophic that stopped me.

The bevel box shim broke on a couple, one bearing broke up and another had the splines on the spider to bevel joint wear out and I had to replace it before it wore out completely but nothing that wouldn't have happened if it had been a chain.

I grease the splines every time i take the rear wheel out and make sure the cush drive rubbers are in good order as if these are worn the spider sits wrong and the splines wear as a result.

Current pan euro has 94,000 on it and the splines are in great shape.

My Breva is shaft drive and I'm liking the reduced maintenance but it took a little getting used to when rolling the throttle on (and off).

Of course, this could also be due to a change of bikes.
