Goes to an Arab state, gets so drunk his wife falls to death. Then complains about how horrible it is. Don't go to a shithole country where drink and drugs are illegal and try and have a party honeymoon.

Yes, they are muslimified idiots who used to push camels around the desert 150 years ago. But their laws are widely known around the world. We complain about people coming here and doing what they want, but we do the same to others? I wouldn't say I have no sympathy, but it's not like the situation was completely out of their hands.

I agree with Pyro on this. I wouldn't even risk doing some dumb shit over there, there are far too many horror stories. It seems they're always looking for reasons to put westerners away.

What? Neutral

From what I've read, the Dubai authorities have confirmed his wife's death was a suicide and the "crime" was not having a license to drink alcohol (ergo, suggesting alcohol can be drunk under strict conditions.)

And wtf is "muslimifified?" Were you the "muslamic ray gun" guy?

Yes, going to the police station to sort out paperwork pertaining to your recently deceased wife while stinking of booze marks you out as a bit of a tool, but I should imagine that he was hardly thinking clearly at the time irrespective of any alcohol consumption.

'fined 2,000 dirham (£340) for drinking alcohol without a licence.'

From what I read, she was so drunk she fell over a railing because she couldn't control herself. Alcohol can be drunk in many places in the middle east with no problem.

I think I didn't put myself over correctly. I'm preempting the hatred that invariably will happen towards Arabs.

I've been to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. It's very clear you can drink, but not get really drunk. They are surprisingly more tolerant of ex-pat's behaviour than they are of their own people. My point is, people complain that we have to be tolerant of all of the different cultures here, yet all these people jump on a bandwagon when someone does something really stupid in another country. The hypocrisy makes me sick.

Sean Emmet wasn't so pissed that he fell off a balcony though. Punishing the husband for the excesses of the wife?

And it was a stopover on the way back from South Africa, where they'd actually got married and honeymooned. They hadn't gone out there to go on the lash.

On the other hand, he did name his daughters Tiffany and Brittany...

I'll sign it for what little it will do. Who hasn't done something a little dumb and wished they'd had a take back. Losing his wife on their honeymoon is bad enough, now he's lost his savings and freedom (effectively).

And who doesn't remember this

The guy is not known for being Mensa. But he does seem a good lad and pretty rapid racer (when his head was straight).

Dubai is a scary place. It's all glitz and niceties on the surface but you know that underneath there is something really shitty happening. Just look at how they treat their immigrant workers from india and the like...

Westerners are welcomed as long as they have money and can do the technical things that the Emiratis need, but if you lose your job or end up in debt you best keep some dollars under your pillow so you can catch a flight out of there.

I went there for a few days a couple of years back and initially it was nice, but the more I saw, the more it made me uncomfortable. If you go there and you don't notice the shit that goes on in the background you're either blind or choosing to ignore the exploitation of indian/asian workers.

e Petitions are worthless, they're a waste of time. There are more productive things you could be doing if its a cause that you support. Spamming forums with the link to an e petition doesn't count as doing anything to support their cause.

According to various newspapers he has signed a statement admitting that he drank alcohol without a licence.

It's a very unfortunate situation for him but Dubai is a country with some incredibly shit laws so it's a somewhat predictable situation.

Dubai often pardons ignorant Johnny Foreigners under an amnesty for the month of Ramadan so he might be there until the 28th of June next year.

Can I just point out that they were on a layover in Dubai on the way back from South Africa. They were only supposed to be there for two days. Perhaps they had no idea about having to have a license to consume alcohol?

Valid point about the layover, but on that ignorance defence, is it OK for Mohammed Wong to come to the UK and (for example) get behind a wheel and drive because he has no idea about having to have a license?

I do sympathise with the chap though, because how long can he survive - literally - in Dubai without money or the ability to work? Surely the best result all round is for the embassy to slip him a new passport?

He should certainly be given some slack having lost his new wife.

What a shitty situation to be in. Sad

"Because whilst the authorities over here just come back with 'we're still continuing our investigation', any other country can't really interfere with that process," he said.

It's a shit situation in a shit country.

It's legal over here it should be legal over there, is a shitty way to look at things. You wouldn't expect yanks to come over here carrying pistols with them, or the Spanish coming here and fucking our 13 year olds.

Respect the laws of where you are and if you don't like it don't go there.

Agreed, but all the reports I've read say he's not been charged in relation to the death of his wife. My suspicion is that they are still investigating that though, otherwise they would have let him go. Either that or it's some beaurocratic SNAFU.

Everything you say is true. But he was arrested for having alcohol in his system when he visited the police station 9 days after his wife died on their honeymoon and he was in the process of being investigated. Future destroyed, in a foreign land on your tod, potentially staring down a murder charge. How many of us would hit the bottle in the evenings to switch the brain off. But as you said, the law of their land applies to everyone there.
