 |
|
I know it's not a bike. But I've just bought a Daihatsu sportrak through work.
It's fitted up with a body lift, big mud plugger tyres, and a snorkel. Along with an interior strip, and a few other hard-core 4x4 bits and pieces.
Will be bang on the green laning again this year. South East area.
Always up for meeting up with any other fellow green lane riders.
Wont be able to keep up, or hit the super narrow lanes that the bikes do. But the truck will make an awesome support vehicle for any of you lot on bikes.
Fitted me tyres up to a set of alloys I looted off another Sportrak

Next things to do are fit extra lights up front for night time laning, and pulling people out who are stuck in the snow.
Gonna be a fun winter. |

That truck is wicked, but far too expensive for what I want.
This is literally going to be a 'rat car' if you like. Everything I fit on it will be looted from the two spare Sportraks I have in the compound (Yes, I have three of them in total now )
Been off work for 3 days. Got in this morning, checked my wheels. They've all held pressure. Perfect!
So shot round the 'pound, and got the truck down off the racking.

Wheels fitted

Took it for a quick spin around on the dirt by the compound. She's a beast! (Snapchat piccy)

Then spent the evening after work with the thing up in the air on the forklift so I could jetwash all underneath. Nice to see it's previously been undersealed too. The things solid as a rock, really has been looked after by somebody in it's younger days.
As you can see from this last picture. All the rear lights have been moved up to the body of the car.
It's got a snorkel fitted, along with a very simple ( and a little noisey ) exhaust system fitted. Exits just over the rear axle, so no big rear-box to get caught up on things.

Spent a bit of time learning bits and pieces on it.
It's got a manual switch for the rad fan. Front fog lights work. Rear fog has been fitted in the centre of the spare wheel (Kinda cool).
The roof all unbolts too, making it a convertible.
It's had a spare bolted to the roof at some point too, leaving 2 great big holes in it. So I will be swapping the roofs over from one of the other trucks.
Will also be changing the seats over. But I've decided to leave the carpets out. I'm just going to cut two big doormat material pieces out. One for each footwell, that I can just jetwash off after.
Bonus points for the heater matrix being so good. It's literally got a 'face melt mode' setting. Nice for those winter green-lane treks. |

Well... It's gone round for it's MOT.
Had to clean and adjust the rear brakes last night, re-wire a sidelight, and bleed the brakes out. But with a bit of luck, it should go through okay.
All being well, I could be cruising it home tonight. The scenic route. |

Find some offroad pay and play sites near you, greenlaning isn't nearly as good as driving at proper sites. |

Interesting stuff. The Sportrak has a roll cage as standard by the way. Only over the rear section of the truck though.
Just got news back from the test centre. It's passed.
Few advisories. Nothing major.
Bit of play in one of the front shock mounts, Brakes are a bit vague, but probably due to the tyres, and the emissions were a little high (Surprising it needed that because it's a 1991 on a carb).
Other than that, It's actually a pretty good, solid motor. Good for the money!
Time to get it insured, and go out to play. It's TAXed til end of Oct still too. WINNER! |

The back part doesn't matter, a roll cage needs to protect the driver & passenger. Like this.
Offroad tyres will make the braking better, not worse. |

We think it's because the rolling radius of the new tyres, is a LOT bigger than standard. And the brakes are pretty small anyway. Stopping power is a little down.
Obviously, off-road, it will stop better with these tyres on.
Paddy, Any time really. I'm taking it out Sunday during the day, gonna be joining onto the Pilgrims Way (Parallel with the A20), at Hollingbourne, and making my way to Lenham in it, where there is a little area to muck around in.
Then from there, It's just any time that's convenient. I need some more lights on it if I wanna take it out in the dark. Gonna put some reversing spot-lights on it too. |

I'm likely to be in Ashford on Sunday, or just outside Ashford playing on an offroader of the 2 wheeled variety... |

The tyres themselves should be better at braking because of the aggressive tread so stopping on tarmac should be better than it would be with road tyres.
You need to go here, its renowned for being the best site in the country. |

Well I've just gone to insure the thing.
Cant find a policy under a grand.
Certainly not paying that. At 26 years old, with 4 years NCB, I refuse to pay over 400 fucking quid!
Edit:
Changed a few bits around, and got it down to £306. Cushty. |

All insured.
Got it down to £245, but would have had to wait until November until the insurance on my van ends, to use the NCB.
So decided to do another quote, with zero NCB, just out of interest, as I'd like to drive it asap.
The quote came out at £220
So it's all insured, TAX'd til end of Oct, and MOT'd for a year. Bring on the weekend! |
