My back tyre had an MOT advisory about a cracked sidewall and my front has some kind of slow puncture, so they're both getting replaced with some nice new BT45's on Monday.

I've heard all the dire warnings about how easy it is to land on your arse with new rubber - is it just a case of taking it easy for the first tankful or is there anything more that needs taking into account?

New tyres have a thin layer of wax on them. I don't think you have to take it easy as long as the first tank full, some people just do a mini burnout to break them in and thats enough I think?

Good excuse to watch this again though..

Watching this with interest, as I'm getting two new tyres fitted to the Diversion on Saturday. Thought I'd get them on before the weather gets worse!

I scrubbed mine in all the way to the edges after 50 miles of riding on a hot day Thumbs Up

Not so sure I'd try it this time of year though Confused

I had the same worries on my first new tyres. In dry weather i found no big difference. Took it easy, didnt go too fast on roundabouts for a bit and felt (maybe in my mind) normal after a couple of hours but be cautious of the sides still i guess as id you remove the layer from most of the tyre having taken it easy then really lean it over hard for the first time the outer area could be a bit dodgy.

Slow n steady gradually returning to full confidence riding is the thing really Thumbs Up

Tyres nowadays don't need much scrubbing in, just take it easy for fifty miles, personally I've never felt jittery on new rubber.

I remember reading somewhere, possibly manufacturers recommendations, that you're supposed to take it easy for the first 100 miles. However, the guy in the local bike shop told me that I should be fine after around 50 miles.

I hedged my bets and only really started to lean the bike at some speed from 80 miles onwards and was fine. That was during dry summer months though. Personally, I don't like leaning too much around bends at all at this time of year.

I put a new tyre on a GSXR1000 when it was on loan to me, near October time and nailed it from the word go. It is all some stupid scare tactics for you to take it easy, just ride it as normal Thumbs Up

Admittedly I have no experience. But I found the Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tyres were horrible in the wet from new. Went down some of my favourite B-Roads, roads were a little damp but nothing major and I was taking it easy, but my god they were rubbish. Like riding through oil. Slipping and sliding, I was doing 15-20mph in the end, using zero brakes and near zero throttle to get round the bends. Took 250 miles to get them ok in the wet. Now they are like superglue.

On my crappy little 125, the ME22's were amazingly grippy from 0 miles.
I know the tyres and bikes are completely different. But they were definitely a different experience when new.

Speaking of which, got some new ME22's to shove on this weekend so I can continue to grind out the footpegs on the November commute Smile

This. Most manufacturers don't actually use release agent any more. Just gradually increase the lean angle - my last set of Pilot Powers went from brand new to knee down at a roundabout within 10 miles. A few laps of said roundabout scrubbed them in nicely.

Just be progressive, don;t go full powah for a while, you don't have to ride like a granny just be smooth and gradually increase your sharpness, lean etc. I'm normally happy with mine within 10 miles.

On a bypass with a lovely sweeping left as an exit means a few attempts at that and it's all fine on the left too.

No left kneedownery though.

That's what happens when you forget, 0.3 miles on the tyres and opened it up going round a bend, Embarassed

Yeah OEM. I'll keep an eye out on what others are using as replacements.

Or is someone taking the p*ss Laughing I lost the rear as soon as I left the garage but managed to keep it upright. Ive always brougt partworn with good ammount of tread left. However af the trip to Devon last month my front needs replacing & both garages near me dont do partworn anymore Sad

I put brand new tyres on the R1 before taking it to Spain, the day before leaving. All I did was ride it so the tyres were warm enough and then used them as intended.

When we got to Spain, most of the journey had been motorways so I hadn't touched the edges, just warmed them up again and went for it. I had 1 slip but that was over confidence and fully loaded bike running out of tyre to use Laughing

Well I made it home alive after picking the bike up this evening. Took it very easy as the roads were wet (not raining though thankfully) but not done many miles yet as I wanted to check the pressures before taking it out properly.

Not noticed any difference yet between the 130 (standard) put on to replace the 140.
