When the white man is in need.. he takes to the sea
-Ghanian Proverb

This months BIKE had in it a 'Great Stories' booklet with all the interesting stories ranging from a reporter riding with the hells angels, a bolt smashing someones forehead , crashing at 170mph and walking away and other cool stories. Well worth a look for anyone of interest in the wild/outrageous things that can and do happen.

But what really got to me was Dan Walsh's story at #6, the Out of Africa section, anyone who owns i bike i reckon could read this and be moved slightly, one passage in peticular.

Setting the scene, Dan Walsh is going around the world (not direct, he is overlanding) and reporting for Bike each month with articles etc about his experiences and feelings.

The story talks about 'When this white man was in need he took to the road...' and how in all places he found freedom but still sorrow, meeting other overlanders and hearing their (truly depressing) stories, seeing the plight of the real needy people, and coming to home to find he's got nothing, so he goes again.

There are to bits that really get to me, call me sad or whatever.. but here they are -

'When this white man was in need he took to the road, Despite or maybe because of the fact there was someone that needed this white man. The woman who loved me was reduced to a photo and imprisoned in a wallet. One day i looked at the photo and she'd gone. Her face was aching from holding that smile... She stepped out of the frame and walked away.'

And about a man he met and travelled with.. Will.

All roads lead home, i'm coming back. Gotta say goodbye to Will. Will was gonna come with me. Will was gunna come with me, Will was gunna meet me here there and everywhere. Will was gunna come next time, definitely. Will died yesterday. Aged 35.

Dunno, just thought someone might be interested.

[Edit - this is what happens when i get reading.. i get thoughtful Confused )

It moved me two years ago when it was originally printed.

I read it again in that booklet and all together those articles made Mr Dan sound like he's running away from something.

Oh and I reckon he didn't pass up the chance for some columbian marching powder when in columbia!

He is an inspired writer however! Smile

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Yeah there was another section, he mentions Cancer, cuckholding (cheating spouses) and other things. I remember cause he talks about how he complained about deaths etc to one man... who had lost his ma, pa and two brothers in a single accident. And to another about cuckholding and the guy had caught his wife in bed with his brother....

If i could write out the whole thing i would, there isnt something in there a biker cant relate to or be inspired by.

Hopefully they'll put them together at some point, something that'll be on my x-mas list next year.
