This makes me angry. Not because a child has needlessly died, but because the parents are trying to blame a product! It was their own fault they didn't loop it up, out of reach and this kind of shit just annoys the hell out of me..

Thoughts?

Standard level of BBC/Daily Mail Hysteria.

They won't be banned. Even if they are, I'll never get rid of mine. I'm just such a rebel. Rolling Eyes

I couldn't agree more mate, we have blinds all over our house, and I have 2 small children. There is a sticky backed hook next to each one for the cord, and they are always loped over them, without fail.

It isn't hard Rolling Eyes

If that was the way life worked, cars would have been banned long ago........

I don't have kids and also don't plan to invite them into my home.

Can I opt out?

i believe these may be already banned in the US - part of my job sees recalls of products from all parts of the world.
i see these come up in the US a lot. often with fatalities reported along with them.

its sad to see this type of thing happen, regardless of the circumstances.

a lot of cribs, baby monitors with long cords are up there too.
before my job i didnt know about any of this kind of stuff. seriously depressing sometimes and can make you awfully paranoid.
it doesnt stop at the physical hazards either. plenty of chemicals out there too......

Suffering butthurt so they're trying to take it out on the rest of the country. Hopefully they'll start an online petition as doing so should make them shut up.

Never say never. Shhh!

Invite stupid people into your house and strangle them with blind cords then claim it was an accident. Whistle

You can (and I do) make these cords safe with a pair of scissors in about 10 seconds.

That's way too much to expect from parents though, so let's ban 'em. Continuous blind cords, scissors, Daily Mail parents, it's all good.

I think anyone supporting a ban should be banned from having scissors children.

Thumbs Up

I feel bad for anyone who has to endure losing a child, but frankly if you didn't know that that noose-shaped string right next to their bed/cot could act like a noose, you shouldn't have had children in the first place.

I hate it when people do something until it effectsthem negatively and then try to preach to others about how dangerous it is.

Legislation was passed a few years ago after a similar occurrence. Now blinds come with a safety device. Looks a lot like this:

https://i.ebayimg.com/t/2-X-Blind-Cord-safety-device-Cord-tidy-Child-safe-/00/s/Nzg3WDExODE=/$(KGrHqZHJCgE+QHceO2VBQRcQUl!v!~~60_35.JPG

Idea is you attach it to the wall with the pulley rope thing like this:

https://www.terrysfabrics.co.uk/images/P/Ball-chain-retainer.jpg

Now if people are too lazy/thick to fit one of these and their kid/cat/themselves happen to murder themselves on it, then its just Darwins natural selection.

Banning blinds is just silly and will never happen.

Really? You can't just cut the cord? Unless you've got some freakishly tall window, you don't actually need a continuous cord.

I think they should ban blinds anyway.

This will save me the effort and expense of moving into a new house, removing them all, asking everyone for three doors in any direction if they want them so they don't later whinge about me throwing out "perfectly good" blinds, applying to the council for a permit to take my van down to the tip, taking the time and effort of driving them down there, putting up curttain poles, letting the missus choose new curtains and fitting them.

Life is too short to dust/clean fecking blinds, they do a shit job of keeping light out, have little to no thermal properties, get tangled up 2 out of three times you use them, clatter and rattle about in the breeze, get in the way when you open the window and are generally a pain in the arse of the first order.

So they're bad for the environment (letting the heat out worse than curtains and landfill when I throw them away). Now they kill children. Their effect on kittens is well documented vide infra so I agree, ban them.

Don't know about skipping ropes but socks definately are.

Flat screen TVs are nearly as dangerous with around 4 deaths a year because of babies/toddlers pulling them over so it was a toss-up between the blind and Peppa Pig really.

I wonder if they'd like to have flatscreen babysitters TVs banned too?

It looks even better written down. Thumbs Up

I say that we should ban less stuff, and force a written exam on would-be parents.
