CG 125 Speed

I was just wondering, any CG owners, past and present, what sort of top end speed should I expect out of the CG's wee little engine?

I don't expect too much out of it really, my trip to work takes about 15 minutes, and it seems fairly nippy from 0-30, but my old crappy Yamaha Scooter had no trouble hitting 65-70 on the flat, however my CG has trouble getting over about 45-50, and the top 2 gears don't seem to do much of anything even at full throttle.

It's not really windy at the time its been struggling.
its a '98 W model
The engine has had issues with juddering here and there even at low speed when trying to accelerate quickly and whacking on the throttle, but I generally attributed that to a cold engine? (When I bought it a year ago it had been sitting in a garage for some time by the looks of it)

I'm about 15 stone and 5 10, mine sits and 55/60 all day, I've had an indicated 75 (long flat run along to a fairly long hill and revving the hell out of it in each gear) but I wouldn't expect it to do that.

Have you opened your carb up? Could have partially blocked jets, that or it's running a little lean.

mine hit 60 once.....that was on the east lancs, if any knows it..basically a long straight road

5th gear lowered the revs & speed, just left it in 4th an went for gold

would happily plod along at 50 though

Mine did 60mph indicated everywhere on the flat, and 65mph with a slight downhill or tailwind. It would also hold 50-55mph in top gear on most long slight inclines like motorways etc.

0-30mph is good enough to beat most average cars from the lights, but even a say a Focus 1.6 would come past by the time you got to 45-50mph assuming both vehicles were driven hard.

I never got more than 83mpg out of mine, but that's good enough to not even care IMO.

I do indeed have a Haynes manual, not that I understand most of it.
I thought about what you said with it running lean, so left the choke half on coming back from work, and 0-30 it definitely seemed a lot nippier, so think you're spot on with that one, thanks again!

Once I got above 30 it was still struggling a bit still at full throttle, so here's hoping you're right about the carbs too

I'm up in Newcastle, I'm debating putting it in for a full service at the place close to me, How much do you think that should run me? (Don't wanna get fleeced)

I haven't had one done in the 6 or so months I've had the thing so couldn't hurt.

I don't have any idea how much a service would be, but if you take it for one see if they'll let you watch and talk you through it so you know what to do next time

My 1990 with a blowing like fook exhaust and a leaky base gasket (and 43,000 miles under it's belt) has managed an indicated 80mph down a big hill with all 6"5 and 15 stone of me, sat upright on it.

Will pull quite rapidly to about indicated 65mph on flat and do about 55 up a hill

Hi there a full service will probably be between 80-150 labour budget more for a main dealer.

Judging by the speeds you lot have been reaching, mine definitely needs a service of some kind then.

On my old CG I managed 60mph, but then I bottled it due to the drum front brake. It also felt really cruel, like when you see images of some fat bloke in a foreign country riding a small donkey side-saddle whilst hitting it with stick. I loved my CG.

Should be quite capable of 65+ mph with a rider your size. You do have to rev them hard in every gear to get a good top speed tho!
