Removing Data tag stickers

Hi all

Has anyone attempted to remove these stickers on fairings?

Was the paint damaged or left a odd square mark on afterwards?

I want to remove one on a panel I might be buying but not sure if these are lacquered on or not and if they are easy to come off!

Their tamper proof so dont come off easy, you might be lucky in that it dont take any paint off and the residue comes off with some wd40, couldn't say for sure though.

Not on a fairing but I did take the one off my petrol tank.

Fucking bastard things they are. Foil/holographic sticker with a rock hard plastic backing. Only thing I can suggest is using a hairdryer to get it hot and then slowly picking it off, literally one tiny scrape at a time.

Removal didn't damage the paint but there is a distinct faded patch where it was.

If it's datatag'd it will also be engraved somewhere on the rear of the panel with the ID number

Even if it desintergrates into a million bits, it's still a sticker, so a combination of heat gun/petrol/sticky label remove should see it gone.

Can substitute the heat gun for a hair dryer if you're poor/missus won't notice.

The panel in question came in the post and was very happy with the condition, absolutely mint. Was just a bit put off by the datatag sticker so had a go at it.

It was a thick sticker, peeled it one way and it started leaving a trail. So picked it from the other end and it was better. It left a residue and it came off very easy with a bit of degreaser.

Then the polish came out and you wouldn't even know it had been there, very happy with the result....even if it is just taking a sticker off a panel!

The data tag stickers are usually tamper proof but do come off fairly easily (the paint underneath could have faded at different rates leaving it still visible though), the dotty code ones are chemically etched into the panels and can even bleed back through new paintwork, you would need a u.v. light to find the micro dots though.

If the bike was data tagged by a previous owner transfer the registration over to yourself, it is only cheap (cheaper than actually buying the kit).

hopefully it has had the whole rf tag set fitted too and once it's registered in your name could help you get your bike back if the worst happens.

But it's just a sticker no?

The actual datatag part is recognised by the printed number on the inside of the panel and the microdots in various places on the panel?

I thought the sticker on the visible part of the panel (bit I removed) was just a sticker which is on every bike? Rather than having data in that particular sticker?
