So I had something for sale on ebay, had been there a few weeks. One guy had been messaging me for a while asking questions. I got him to email me so we could do a deal outside ebay, he agreed and asked more questions and took aages to reply. At this point it was still on ebay, today someone made an offer which was higher and this guy would reply to me almost straight away. I counter offered a little higher and he accepted.

I told the other dude sorry it's sold. He was pissed and said 'I hope you get shafted'.

Now being that someone already said yes to doing a deal before and then said 'you can sell it to someone else' I couldn't be assed to have the same again. IMO the deals not done until you've paid

So was I right or wrong?

Whilst there is an element to question regarding the "a gentleman's word is his bond" issue, a little bit of diligence is required on either side.

After all it *is* an auction site, and if you have still listed it, then he has to be aware that things could change.

Surely if you want something enough you would reply to messages faster let alone paying for it straight away! And he has no excuse because his messages were sent from an I phone

Even after ebay fees I will get a little more than what he offered

When I have contacted sellers and wanted something I have acted that day. I have bought all sorts of stuff by doing the having a view and giving a fair price of what I was prepared to pay for the item, both myself and the seller have been happy. If the seller thinks they can get more by leaving it on ebay then I have let them get on with it, put my lower bid in and see where it goes, usually less than my in person offer.

I had a similar thing happen a few weeks ago. I told someone in Bedford that I'm interested in an airgun he had for sale and asked him if he could wait a couple of hours for me to drive back to Cambridge from Brum then I'd text him and come round. When I did text him, I got back "sorry, it's sold". Now he could have easily told the other person he could have it if I hadn't got back in an hour or two and waited for me. In your case though, it sounds like the bloke had ages to cough up. You could have maybe given him first refusal and just explained someone else has made a better offer and the item needs to be sold so "put up or shut up".

As for tardy replies.......if it's by email, not everyone has easy access - even in this day and age. Or did you ring him?

I've sold a few bikes on ebay in the past, had a few people contact me with "oh yeah I'll definitely 110% have it, I get payed in two days so I'll have it then" responses. Never hear from them again.

If he wanted it so bad he should have payed for it, rather than wait around.
