Although on a point of order, referring to the engine cutting out as a "stall" is a poor turn of phrase. He had an engine failure.

The term "stall" means something entirely different in the context of aviation. ie the wing no longer giving lift due to either insufficient airspeed or too high angle of attack. Usually pilot error rather than mechanically induced.

If you stall, you aren't going to land. You are either going to recover or crash, unless you were very close to the ground with the undercarriage down at the time.

Anyway. Excellent reflexes. Prop hadn't even stopped moving by the time he got the first "fuck!" out.

Because they practice for this exact thing happening, have a drill and know what to do.

What he should also have been doing as he was looking for a landing site (on the assumption he had a radio) is sending out an all stations pan-pan radio message.

What do you shout?

Amusing that at 22 he's been an instructor for 2 years, while we wouldn't even give him a license to ride a CB500.

I may be wrong, but the engine seemed to restart easy enough when he tried. He waited twenty seconds before even attempting it. Not saying he should have stayed in the air but he was at very low altitude, it would have bought him a lot more time.

Why would you do that?

Far from a deadstick. The thing is still totally under control in all three axis as long as you adopt a pitch picture which maintains sufficient airspeed to create lift.

The only time an aircraft like the one in the video will deadstick is through direct mechanical failure of the controls or if you land up in a a flat spin. The chances of landing up in a flat spin AND engine failure at the same time are slim but that is when you would be strongly encouraged to abandon the aircraft while you are still in posession of some altitude.

As a general rule when an engine fails, you can get to any point you can see within an arc described by your wingtips as an inefficient glider.

If you're flying an F104 that means you're totally fucked because said arc intersects the pilots arse and it is time to get out.

Step 1 - Aviate - if you can fly the aircraft, fly the aircraft
Step 2 - Navigate - if you can see where you want to go, go there
step 3 - Communicate - once you're going there, tell someone.

simple! Smile
