From a bit of reading up and listening to YouTube videos, it sounds likely. Tried to start it tonight - the loud "clunk" and stop it was doing is gone, but it won't start now. The starter is trying to turn the engine over, still makes a knocking sound when I try to start it on the stand, which goes away when it's upright. I haven't tried bumping it yet because I don't know what that'll do to it.
So. Looking at the manual, getting at the starter clutch involves pretty much taking the whole engine apart, and references are made to "holding the flywheel with a universal holder". Is this even worth considering as a relative novice without access to a garage? And in the meantime, does the starter clutch disengage when the bike is in gear (i.e. if I bump it, should I expect the knocking to stop when it's in gear, and will it be rideable?) ____________________ Current Bikes: 1983 Honda VF400FD / 2003 Honda VT750 Shadow

Having figured out that the starter is at the front of the engine, rather than at the back where it was on my 125, it looks like I can leave all those scary looking gears in the middle well alone, which makes the whole thing a lot less intimidating. Good weather permitting, I'll take a look this week. It looks a smaller job than I originally feared, so hopefully it's not going to be ridiculously expensive even if I need to take it in to be done. ____________________ Current Bikes: 1983 Honda VF400FD / 2003 Honda VT750 Shadow
