And if you had fitted one of the cheaper alarms such as Solalarm for about £80 you would have got exactly the same discount.

Yup, it's a pain Rolling Eyes

Last night I was surfing for insurance and I found a quote of £375. Not bad, I thought, so I started to fiddle with the options. I wondered how much I could shave off if I bought a brand name lock and chain. So I picked an expensive one at random and....£392 Shocked That's right, it went up. I think the formula they use to calculate quotes has a random number in there somewhere Confused

So on the basis of that saving it'll pay for itself in 13 years time Rolling Eyes Very Happy
How long were you keeping the bike for? Wink
At least jobs done and you'll have some piece of mind knowing it's there.

If your insurer is Carole Nash I remember them being very pushy to have an alarm fitted when I renewed my policy. Even put me to a special 'department' offering discount on the installaton etc.

Suddenly the £30 self install alarms from eBay don't seem that bad - working alarm that doesn't cost an arm and a leg - has to be a good move.

Won't stop it being stolen! If a thief wants it, they will have it simply because very few people pay any attention to alarms that go off these days.

On the other side of the coin is the possibility of the system shutting down your ignition system whilst you are on the bike, and it often happens mid bend. I must have dealt with a dozen fatals and a couple of dozen injury crashes caused by so called wonder alarms shutting down the ignition system whilst being ridden causing the back wheel to lock up.

The insurance industry have admitted to me that they don't really understand bikes, and they just assumed that the more expensive the alarm the better it would be, but were not aware of the peripheral problems this can cause. When i told them that before long one of the insurance companies as well as the alarm manufacturers couldbe held liable for an injury sustained as a result of them insisting on fitting particular alarms, the person I spoke to (one of the big bosses) started getting quite worried as he agreed it would leave them wide open.

I believe that a complete review of the discount system is due in the very near future!

How much does having a bike in a locked garage bring down the cost as soon I will be having the bike locked up in the garage. Smile

Versus being parked on the street? It dropped me from £500 to £300 on a CG.

Very disconcerting! T.C in your experience are there any particular makes of alarm that this occurs with? If not, what causes it? Why does it seem to occur mid bend? Shocked

Usually a percentage job on the reduction i was told, when i was ringing around i spoke to one guy and he said that my Meta 357 T (alarm/immobiliser) would reduce most insurance premiums by 5% on TPFT.

Reason phoning is often the best method, locked in a garage is one thing, but might be a good idea to mention if its ground anchored, got a garage door anchor and if there are other bikes kept there too... insurance companies more likely to be generous if you seem to be security conscious.

Thats quite worrying T.C, any idea why it happens or is it simply a case of knackered/dodgy electrics?

My alarm stopped my bike being stolen. They lifted the cover, set off the alarm and I heard the van screech away as I was on my way out to see what was happening.

I'll never tell people that an alarm isn't worth having, only that it's to be used in conjunction with other forms of security.
