Hi all,

Long story short, the younger brother was involved with a head on hit and run with a taxi driver which mangled the front end of his YBR 125. What markings are actually required on a headlamp for it to pass a UK MOT? Searching online seems to point toward requiring an E-Mark, but none of the replacements which I have come across appear to come with this. As with most 125 riders, he would rather pay £35 for a replacement headlamp than £100+ for one from Yamaha if possible.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

For the MOT I don't think any marking is required. Legal requirements are different but (given the number of imports) not really an issue.

All the best

If I can't be bothered looking it up, I guarantee you that a typical MOT tester won't either. If it lights the wall in front of the bike and not the rest of the MOT station, you'll be fine.

You do need an e-mark and some testers might fail it without. I've definitely heard of people being failed for non e-marked items like indicators. As for the light just about all of them will have an e-mark if it looks like a normal headlight (i.e not one of those dodgy moped streetfighter things).

This do for you?

I've looked in the MOT test manual (https://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/) and can't find any mention at all of headlamps (and definitely not bloody indicators) requiring an e-mark on them.

The only bit that mentions it is under 'information', in section 1.6:
Quote:
a lens may carry
􀂃 a European approval mark - a circle
containing an ‘E’ and a number, or
􀂃 a rectangle containing an ‘e’, and a
number.

This isn't a reason for rejection, it's just information to help the tester identify the fact that a european-type light may be fitted.

Yup, was on 125cc sportsbikes. If it weren't the case I'd have put orange LEDs (of which I have many) on motorbikes to bodge them through MOTs rather than paying five quid for replacement e-marked indicators Thumbs Up

The tester was wrong - neither indicators nor headlamps need to be e-marked to pass an MOT.

This is the full list of reasons a bike can fail an MOT related to indicators:

1. A direction indicator
a. missing or obscured
b. does not show a light of the appropriate colour
c. not working or not flashing 60 to 120 times per minute, or which is affected by the operation of another lamp.

2. A ‘tell tale’ does not function or operate correctly.
Note: If the indicators can be seen from the
riding position there is no need for a ‘tell tale’
to operate.

3. An indicator lamp
a. so damaged or deteriorated that its
function is impaired.
b. insecure.

4. A defective or insecure switch or one which
does not operate the direction indicators on
the side selected.

Hi all,

Thanks very much for all the help. The headlight which Im-a-Ridah posted is one which I had my eye on, but didn't want to commit to until finding out more on the lighting rules/regs.

What are their names? What bikes? When did they fail? At what MOT stations?

As said, I'd have used LEDs on the MOTs if I thought I could get away with it. I'd have also saved myself a lot of time and effort removing auxillary front, tail and indicator lights.

The MOT regs also say new, excellent condition bearings shouldn't fail an MOT. Still, I had just that type of bearing fail. So I took them out, greased them, put them back in and now it's a pass Rolling Eyes

as long as the headlight produces the right pattern and dips in the right direction you should have no problems, if in doubt have the headlight checked with a beam checker prior to MOT as some of the aftermarket lights on the net are only suitable for roads and markets where they drive on the right hand side of the road.

never heard of any tester looking for an "E" mark on indicators or any lights ever, They have looked at some of my exhaust systems for marks and checked the speedo for KPH but that is all, never any lights.

PS, next time you set you tappets on the 400 burger would you mind taking a pic of the cam bridge as I need one for a 250 burger and was hoping they were the same.

Question was to Im-a-Ridah. Wink

I ask because E marks in indicators and headlights may have been added to the MOT regs recently, but they didn't used to be there. Road legal is not the same as MOT-worthy - consider speedos.

Willco on the tappets snaps.

I will ask the guys at the MOT centre when I am in on Wednesday, these guys are government testers so they should have the answers, the speedo test is a bit different here (N.I) as we have a land bordr with ROI which uses KPH only which mean we have to have both KPH and MPH or the bike/car fails. I assume there is a cut off date for MPH only here but not sure what it is.

The NI MOT test has always been a bit different to the mainland one. On the mainland the speedo is not a tested item at all. However it is a legal requirement for the speedo to show mph and kmh so even though it could pass an MOT you could still get done for it.

Not sure when the mph and kmh requirement came in, but there have certainly been bikes imported as official imports since then that were not compliant such as the Aprilia RS250 (there was a an MCN scare story about this in the mid 1990s).

All the best
