Just looking for my next car, and faniced something fun for a few months. Been looking at all the older cars that have the fun factor.

Looking at the VW Golf II G60, Golf VR6, Supra etc.

For the life of me I can't think of anymore... could you kind members of bcf please illuminate me... thanks.

Mk2 MR2, 300ZX, RX7, any 6 cylinder BMW 3 series (Inc M3), Classic impreza. In fact, the only car I'd count on your list is the Supra, but it pretty much isn't as much fun as an MR2 or M3.

I always wanted a Rover Tomcat 220 in the late 90's / early 00's. Insurance said no. Sad

I know of a few "chavvy" ones.

Vauxhall Astra MK2 16V GTE
Ford Escort RS Turbo
Ford Fiesta RS Turbo
Vauxhall Nova GTE / GSI (Or just a Nova base with a C20LET engine quick in straight lines)
Vauxhall Cavalier SRI / 4X4 turbo.
Mercedes 190E Cosworth

The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth is the car I'd pick if I had enough ££££ for it and insurance. Crying or Very sad

Most of these cars probably won't be to your tastes though.

For that budget I'd go R33 GTsT Skyline, ST205 GT-Four Celica or MR2 GT-Turbo. You'll get a fine, lowish mileage example for £5,000 - £6,000 of any of those three.

It'd just depend how many seats I wanted.

Would get you a tidy 400hp Supra...

I can't see how its not as fun as an MR2, admittedly I drove the NA MR2 but it was boring as hell, I have more fun in the loan car I have at the minute and its automatic Laughing

Having owned a Supra... I'd definitely aim for a manual, if you look hard you'll find a clean TT manual for that price. Bit on the heavy side but goes sideways the same as most others and can be upped to ~600hp for £2k. Buuuuurrrrrr pssshhh Wink

No, they're not. Ones that have been fettled to the point of ruin might be but other than that I have to disagree. Obviously the GTR is light years better but also wayyyyyy out of budget.

Do you want to drive it anywhere or just look at it? A 400bhp car will drink 400bhp's worth of petrol.

MR2 or MX5 for fun. Well under your budget and you could probably sell it for what you paid for it.

Keep some money set aside for parts and servicing. Unless you're paying (getting fleeced) top dollar for a perfect car, it will need some money spent on it.

Put an Impreza on your list as well.

An impreza will bore the shit out of you coming from a bike, 'ish' power and 4wd = boring

MR2's are fantastic fun, even the NA ones, a bmw 330Ci isn't as quick as you'd believe.
Not sure what all the love for the cosworths is about, 200bhp standard? no thanks.

You can disagree but not many people do. They're by far the worst skyline of the lot. They're fat and boaty ugly with a crap interior. Only the engine saves it

220bhp cosworths I think. The MR2 is only 240bhp, and the the NA ones which you include are far less ( 170ish? ). So your post is quite weird. You say 'no thanks' to a 220bhp car, but recommend one with much lower bhp

ps, yes I know bhp isn't the be all and end all of car speed before someone says it Razz

The MR2, NA or turbo is a small 2 seater, RWD mid engine car, it's fantastic around the backroads and is great fun, the cosworth's are big old things, that's my point.

My point as well is that everyone always goes on about 'I want a cossie'.... I am failing to see the desire tbh

It's a nostalgia thing for most. Ignoring the supercars of the era the Sierra Cosworth, the Audi uR Quattro, the Lancia Delta Integrale or the Lotus Carlton were the cars to aspire to owning. Of all those the Sierra is the most achievable.

Well I had a 306 1.9TD and it was by far the most fun car I ever drove, and it was great on fuel. Very Happy

Is that from the 90s? Thinking
