Some of them must get seriously hurt, the one where the guy gets hit on the head with the axe or hammer and just goes down, looks like a KO to me!

Hauberks don't do squat except tire you out, go plate or go home. Actually, a thick akheton works well, or wax harden some leather.

I haven't done reenactment for years, since shortly after the borglets came along. It's very sedate in the UK compared to how they roll in those ex commie states, but there are still a few too many frothing eye-rollers hiding in among the "Jolly good hit old chap!" participants for comfort.

Small events or one on ones tend to be OK, it's the bigger mêlées where tempers get lost, egos get out of hand, and people aren't going to work on Monday. Hurt

Hauberks are fun to make, that is roughly where my interest in muddy costumed men ends.

I did two. One in 6mm ID with over 40,000 links. Ow. Ow.

I was beginning to think I should have gone for larger links (c.7-8 mm ID, 2 mm wire). What thickness were the 6 mm links?

About 6,000 done so far, stopped for GTA5.

Thickness I dunno, they were actually square section split ring washers as one of the few extant 950-ish byrnies (and 40,000 x 6mm is a byrnie) is flat section rather than round.

The weight of 6mm is just appalling, because it's mostly metal. I'd really suggest 8mm+ ID for practical use.

Actually I'd suggest just buying one of the riveted shirts from India, they're just ridiculously cheap now.

One of the poor sods of my acquaintance ordered dozens of them when they were first available over a decade ago. The prices actually tumbled while that batch was being produced, and he took a multi-thousand pound bath on the venture, got the hoof from his missus, it didn't end well.

Hazardous occupation, reenactment. Whistle

No shit Shocked - I remember them selling for about a grand or two a pop; £80 just doesn't seem right.

Looks brutal at times, but the floppy sword battle at 0:56 made it look like LARPing. Laughing

They bend or they shatter. Actually, sometimes they bend and they shatter, as can also be seen happening.

Apocryphally, one of the reasons that commie combat tends to be more entertaining than the UK "careful now" version is that they don't have any of our silly girly-man hangups about beering up before the bash. Very authentic... Very Happy

I suppose that gives a real impression of how a medievel battle would have gone just without the blood and gore, those guys can certainly shift in all that armour. Shocked

Getting going isn't the problem, it's stopping. Also, you can't see your feet while wearing a full face lid, and if you're being properly orfentik, you're doing it in turnshoes with smooth soles. Given all that, their commitment is impressive.
