Actually, in the UK you can cycle on the roads regardless of whether there is a 'cycle lane' or not.

Actually we signed up for the Vienna Convention on road traffic in 1968 which designates the bicycle as a vehicle. So if while you were piloting said 'vehicle' you were to ignore a blue circlular (mandatory) sign showing a lane which a bicycle must use you would be committing an offence.

It doesn't seem to be something that is enforced by anyone though.

Actually, it means "route to be used by pedal cycles only".

In the same way that a bus doesn't HAVE to drive in a bus lane.

Also.
Rule 61 of the Highway code wrote:

Use cycle routes, advanced stop lines, cycle boxes and toucan crossings unless at the time it is unsafe to do so. Use of these facilities is not compulsory and will depend on your experience and skills, but they can make your journey safer.

Actually, bicycles have been "carriages" (i.e. vehicles) in case law since 1878 (Taylor v. Goodwin's interpretation of the Highways Act 1835) and in statute since 1888 (Local Government Act 1888 S85).

"Must" use? If there were such a sign (and there is not), it would have to be listed in section 10 of The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 (and it is not). There are remarkably few signs that you commit an offence by ignoring - most of them are advisory.

There may be a local Traffic Regulation Order backing any particular sign or lane but that would be on a case by case basis, and would have to be very clearly signed.

Basically:

Dashed line = you can drive in it but you're a prick for doing it. Can stop in it for "emergencies" that people presume to be picking up milk or the paper.

Solid line = compulsory cycle lane. Compulsory in that other vehicles MUST NOT use them. NOT compulsory for cyclists to use them. And you're still a prick if you use them.

When I cycle, I see a lot of other cyclists jump red lights. That annoys me and I make it my objective to overtake them once I see orange! However I am fat so half of those cunts get away, and when I do catch them I'm stuck at another red light. FFS

So? That's their choice. If they want to get splatted then that's their prerogative - eventually something bad will likely get them.

May be true in some parts of the US but in the UK you don't have to use one if it's there. They're full of shit anyway (much like the people who decide where they go and painting them 6 inches wide is a good idea).
