My local garage have told me it's at least a month before they can even look at it, and they reckon it might be throwing good money after bad to even get them to look at it. So I bow to the BCF experts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol4TOU3d1RQ

The backstory:

A few weeks ago, I changed the oil and oil filter with fresh 10w40. When I drained it, only about a litre and a half of oil came out. I filled it with the manual specified 2.6l, which took it to between the lines on the sight glass. A few days after, the starter made a strange clunk sound when I tried to start it. Give it 15 seconds, and it started without a problem.

On Tuesday, it had a good 100 mile rideout, and didn't give me a moments trouble all day. On Wednesday morning, I tried to start it to go to work. It made the clunk sound again, and then when it started, it sounded like this. Since then, the starter tries but fails to start it until I've bumped it. When I try and bump it, the back wheel seems very keen to lock up.

I've had a look at the starter clutch after suggestions from here, and although I don't have a clue what I'm looking for, nothing seems to be loose or damaged in there. Also, the starter clutch is on the right. The knocking comes from the left, and only when it's leaning to the left.

The fact that the knocking only happens when it's leaning makes me thing that the starter has knocked something loose, which is now rattling around and making a noise. I have a sinking feeling I'm about to become intimately acquainted with the crankcase, and the long list of things that the service manual tells me to remove to get at it.

Can anyone suggest any things that are doable in my backyard before I put a cover on it until I can borrow a garage?

Foley's in Fenton. They're fully booked for the rest of the month, and the guy pointed out that by the time I've paid for collection I'd probably be looking at £70 just to diagnose it, and even then they might not be able to get hold of the parts for a 30 year old bike.

I'm not hugely precious about doing the work myself for the learning experience, but obviously I can't do a full teardown in my back yard, so posting here is kind of a last ditch attempt at finding an easy fix before it gets covered up while I find a garage to work in.

Did these have the emissions control system, that was on californian version of NC27? It does sound similar to what I've experienced when the hose of this system blew on mine. Took it all out and sealed up, worked great.

Yeah to be honest had a feeling you meant there, personally I'd try Jackhammers in stoke. Chris the head mechanic is a good guy and doesn't rip you off as much.

Went foleys for an Mot they failed the bike on things that weren't even fails. Regarding parts it would be cheaper for you to get them yourself anyway.

Even ignoring the leaning over bad noise, even upright it sounds proper fucked to me, like the valve gear is busy grinding itself to bits.

I think you need to accept that the engine will need to come apart for a better idea of what disasters lie within.

agh sounds fun........ I had this kind sound with my cx literally last week,

Thought it might be the cam chain,
turned out the crank was really really worn and got to the point of pummelling the big end shells in to chunks, it's actually quite amazing really.... Totally knackered the crank and needed to find another one.

out of curiosity can you see the oil and if theres any metal particles in it? to see if anything is grinding inside?

Seems to me that this missing 1.5 litres would have meant it was running very low before the oil change. It's quite possibly that it was slowly munching its own main bearings before you changed and it was already destined for failure before the change.

Or it's now massively overfilled and the crank is bashing its way through the pool of oil below (could explain why it changes when leaning). But if it's between the lines like you said then this is not the case xD

So the crank is fucked then?

Not sure, wouldn't really explain why it changes when leaning

Forget the leaning, just listen to the noise.

It's knocking.

Sounds fucked. I would NOT start it again until you have A taken the cam covers off and made sure the cams haven't lunched themselves and B drained and strained the oil checking for particles, does sound like big end bearing has gone.

Edit: not unlikely low oil pressure has lunched big end bearings and top end at same time.
