Firstly hello you won't recognise me because I am brand spanking new to this place!!

So I bought my first bike a couple of days ago, a second hand Keeway Speed 125 off gumtree for £400, which after looking online seemed to be a reasonable beginner bike. Instead of the stock fuel cap, the guy had fitted a plastic temporary fuel cap (see below); https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_178201_langId_-1_categoryId_165565
It is a plastic cap with screw sticking straight down unto which there is a spinning 'thing' with 3 'grippy-leg-things' that clamp round the entry to the tank, picture it?
I had a bit of trouble with it at the petrol station yesterday during my first fill-up, and this morning after trying to remove it to check it out I managed to loose the bottom part into the tank. I have fished about with pliers but no signs of it.

I'm no expert and have no idea if the plastic is going to be eaten away by the petrol and harmlessly disappear over time or if its likely to become a major problem. Lot of speculation online just wanted concrete answer! Mad

Forget about it, wont cause any harm!
Buy a proper filler cap!
As for the plastic melting, most of the metal on a Keeway will have "melted" before the plastic will. Rolling Eyes

Take the tank off and pour out the petrol into a suitable container through a sieve or filter to catch the plastic, then refit the tank and reuse the fuel.

By careful application of a very tiny amount of common sense, I have arrived at the following answer:

They wouldn't make a petrol cap out of a material that dissolves in petrol because it would be as much use as a chocolate teapot.

How big is the 'bottom bit'?

Quite a chunk? Leave it be.

Small enough to foul/block fuel tap/line? Drain and fish out. Thumbs Up

Like that?

If it is one of the big bits at the bottom, ignore it until you find a reason to drain the tank. So long as it is too big to be sucked into the fuel system, it is inert enough to sit in the fuel without issue.

I suppose if there was a fuel guage, a bit of plastic could get tangled up in it leading to a misleading reading.
