PostPosted: 21:30 - 08 Oct 2013    Post subject: Honda Varadero, compression issue. not running correct. HELP Reply with quote

firstly i apologise for first posting in the wrong section.

So I bought A Honda varadero 125
i choose this bike because i thought it would be reliable.

Anyway, Yesterday when i bought it it rode home completely perfect about 10 miles.
Then in the morning after i tried to ride it and it back fired a bit and went sort of sluggish on acceleration, I immediately thought it hasn't got enough fuel.
Filled it up then it started getting worse when i tried to start it. So i thought could be spark plug.
Changed both to brand new plugs it then worked for about half a hour, and then it proceeded to happen again, usually after starting it or slowing down.

I was close to a Honda garage so i stopped in and spoke to one of the mechanics he fiddld with the coils and had a look but nothing he didnt have a clue either.

then we took spark plugs out to see if they were fine in case of a mixture issue, they looked fine had no way to check for spark as the battery is dead bought a new one today, but they looked clean and shiny still.

What actually happends
So i will bump the bike and it will slug like there is nothing happening will get to about 10mph then suddenly it will just work again and be perfect.
sometimes slowing down causes it, and not sure if its is coincidence but soemtimes gearigndown sorted it for a while.

Then it was doing it continuously on the way home got to 10mph i tried to pull choke and it just killed the bike after bumping it again it worked fine for about 2 minutes and went back to being crap.
as i was pulling into my drive which is slightly sloped it picked up again. rode down the street and died.

i managed to get to 5th gear and only reach 20mph.

So what im asking is for someone to help me any ideas or if you have had the problem, just spent out on this bike no money to go to a garage specially as the Honda one didn't seem to have much idea.
Greatly appreciate any help i can get thanks

I should also note it had a slight oil leak/ drip

That's the carbed model isn't it?

I'd suggest checking them out, the jets could be blocked

Working on slope not on level ground? Water in fuel? Try draining the carb float bowl out?

i thought this was the case but not sure it did die going up a hill,
anyway i just tried to test the coils
results; starting with front coil off = worked
starting with back coil off= worked
after it was switched on;
pulling front plug off= killed the engine
pulling back plug off= killed the engine

I took a video of it running this was full throttle

that does not rule out water in the fuel, and it is easy to drain the float bowl just turn the fuel tap off, open 1 drain screw on the fuel float bowl, let it drain out until the fuel stops coming out then do the screw up and turn the fuel back on, literally less than a minute with a flathead screw driver will accomplish this.(and would rule out water in the float bowl?)

the float bowl screws are the flathead at the bottom of the picture, one on each carb.

Sounds like dirt/water in carbs, get them off and clean them out is what I'd do, if you don't have the skills or tools then find someone who has or you will be in a world of pain.

Basically... you need to pop the carbs on. It really isn't as daunting as it sounds.

Pop em off, remove the bowls, give then a clan and unscrew the jets, 1 by 1 if you feel the need, clean them out and reassemble.

Are you really, really sure it's not just the coils.
I only ask as experienced similar symptoms in the past (on inline 4 though). That turned out to be a dodgy coil. Does the rev counter fluctuate on its own?, that was another symptom on mine.

Although if you have been running low on fuel or running with the tap on reserve you may have issues with the carbs (iirc don't think inline fuel filter comes as standard).

Tips.. don't lose any bits and use the right size screwdriver.

Getting them off and on with be the hardest bit, removing the bowls and checking for crap won't take long at all.

Generally the drain screw/bolt will be at the lowest point on the carbs, under the float bowl.

why would a mixture screw have pipes leading off them? the drain screws have pipes leading off them to drain the fuel elsewhere than on the back of the engine, sigh...

you leave the pipe on, turn the fuel off, then undo the same screw on both carbs until it stops draining.

Okay rang up my local mechanic he said its £70 per hour and may take up to two
i cant afford that but he sounded sure it was the jets aswell the carb seems very hard to get too but i guess its just trial and error and take lots of pictures
It looks like i have to take the tank off
as you can see in the video you can barley see the carb so i guess i have to strip everything unless anyone knows a easier way?
