This is exactly why we need to being back hats as fashion items for men. I don't mean those daft woolly things either.

Nothing shows solemnity and respect like removing one's trilby.

You did the best you could, btw. It's always a slightly awkward moment IMO.

I think 'less is more' often in these situations, although you can go out your way to do something grand and commemorative sometimes something as simple and understood as you nodding is meaningful enough.

When my father in law died, he had the RAF ensign draped over his coffin, Every old gent that we went past took off their hat if they wore one, several saluted, made me bubble.

Id like to have a naval one draped over my exhusband and have him buried at sea.........................unfortunately, he is still alive.

If you were wearing a hat you could of took it off, but other than that not a lot that you could of done. Just being there would have been reassurance to the family.
