GSXR 4th gear gone...

So... riding along, the bike starts making a grinding noise and jumping back and forth kangarooing...

Sure enough, I go through each gear and gun it, only 4th is affected.

What do? It's scrap.

I'd be worried about all the probable bits of shrapnel getting into the cylinders/bores/rods etc.

gearbox out and remove and replace 3rd

I'd go for the replacement engine but I can't even find any on eBay, sadly! '98 SRAD injection model so a bit rarer.

just so you lot know, I stripped 5th gear about 3k miles back. I dropped the oil, changed the filter, and although i didnt cut the filter open, i didn't see any obvious shrapnel. the oil was actually much cleaner than the previous oil change.

Been riding it since and it's been okay.

Just change the oils mate, flush the engine, change filter and you are sorted.

if its a bike worth spending on then get the gearbox changed, otherwise just ride it.

I'd sort it out if I was you. If a gearbox isn't selecting all gears properly you can end up with it locking up on you while you're riding, which isn't funny and will do even more damage maybe knackering the engine cases or a shaft say as well as causing a potential accident for you. Supposedly a bent selector fork and/or worn dogs on the relevant gears is preventing you getting fourth gear.

I know this is kind of an open-ended question, but what am I looking at to get this sorted at a garage? Ball park figure.

Other than the gearbox, the engine is pretty decent for its mileage, no rattles or tapping, and pulls very nicely, so I'd like to repair it. I don't have the knowledge or the tools to do this myself unfortunately.

I'd expect at least £500 but probably much more? The gear and selector forks new will cost a couple of hundred pounds. May be more economical and easier to simply get a replacement engine and fit it if you don't want to do the work yourself.

With a second hand engine it could be in any state that's my only aversion to doing that. I don't mind paying around £500-£600 to get this sorted whether that's a new engine or a gearbox rebuild. I have the money, I just don't know which route to go down.

If I can get the second hand bits is a garage likely be willing to fit? I'm guessing if so they won't guarantee the work...

I've had no problem with small independent places fitting parts I've taken to them so that might be an option but I'd expect the labour costs to be high, just ask them. Of course there's no guarantee that a secondhand engine will be perfect but most are sold from 'running bikes with no known faults.'

It's really simple to change the gearbox on a SRAD engine. You don't even need to take the engine out of the frame. Exhaust off, sump off, casing off... then the gearbox is right there. I did it on my friends SRAD 750 when 6th gear exploded. It took about 3 months of it being apart because we got lazy, but it's probably a 3 hour job if you put your mind to it.

Counting gears is fun... Went into 4th on way to work, it engages ok, and drives almost but then starts jolting around and grinding. Just avoiding it at the moment.
