How often do you have to retest?

I'm hopeing i can do some advanced training now i have something a bit nippyer...

Slightly offtopic, How did they react to your sports bike? did they look down their noses aloft their bmw tourers? just wondered really, i'd imagine they are pretty grown up and all, just the impression i had been given..

I think the retest is every 3 years isn't it?

They do not look down their noses at sports bikes. The Chairman of the local advanced motorcyclist group, (EAMG) rides a Fireblade.

I have ridden with him, on his CB500, I was on my CBR1000f, I couldn't get near him, he is a riding God Thumbs Up

every 3 years, although I will be going for gold in the spring as I will ride less from the book and more as I normally do now that ai know what they are looking for


not been posting as I have been busy, got a new job Very Happy


my examiner is one of the most senior ex police chappies in the area, bazillions of years experience

and he showed up on a 1200 bandit with a loud can, small plate and dark visor - so don't believe everything you hear

also, he commented on my missing overtakes and not using both sides of the road when it was safe to do so

so don't think it's all very boring and sedate either


I can't recommend it enough, go join your local Rospa group and do it in the spring

it's virtualy free after all

I was a senior RoSPA examiner and diploma instructor/examiner for 23 years, and people were always surprised when I turned up on a sports bike as they had always believed that we rode full dress beemers or Pans. It helped dispel some of the myths, and I know that even now many examiners still ride sports bikes when testing for that very reason.

Silver grade is commendable, bronze is still worth having as it is the same level as an IAM pass, but gold is the ultimate as that is the equal of a Police class 2 and is regarded as being the highest civillian qualification available.

When I get a moment I will post up how the different grades are achieved and what the examiner is looking for (I was responsible for a lot of the policies in respect of examining until March of this year) and it may give you an idea of what is needed!

I think to a degree the myths probably are perpetuated by guys rideing like prats, which is frowned upon and they go home with the impression they dislike sports bike riders, as opposed to disaaproveing of prats Very Happy

I don't suppose either of you have contacts with the derbyshire rospa group? at the moment i'd be happy if somebody could observe for a short while and then rip my rideing to bits.. give me some usefull pointers, dont feel i could commit to doing any tests for a while, if i was going to i'd do it all out.
I've got a phone number to try, sombody called steve, ex bike examiner, may or may not be doing rospa still..

T.C. /Mr C - Is the diamond award something that is attainable on bikes? or is this a car only thing?

TC I'd value your opinion..

now the conditions were shit so I was preoccuppied with grip but here's what he commented on after the test

1) a missed shoulder check, having stopped in the road wating to turn right into a minor off a major, having done the mirror check, indicated, shoulder check ... sports car came belting over the brow towards us (in a 50) .. as soon as he was gone I just went.. my thought was if there was anyone on my offside he would have been collected by this prat but I know I should have checked

2) a couple of missed shoulder checks when moving from a 30 to NSL, different instructors seem to have different opinions about this one...

3) a couple of missed overtaking opportunities, although we did about 5 overtakes on country a roads.. in the wet

4) returning to my own side of the road following an overtake approaching a left hand bend... ordinarily I would have stayed on the "wrong" side of the road until turn in (as he did) but I thought Rospa frowned on this

5) following a series of bends with good visibility on the "book" line instead of straightlining them - hands up, guilty I know this was not good

6) immediately leaving the start point we joined a dual carriageway which he had told me we were taking the first exit, he commented that I stayed in lane 1 at 60 ish mph instead of moving to lane 2 and then back to lane 1 to take the exit which was 1/2 mile from our joining point .. again guilty, we had just started




none of these are serious I know but enough to make the difference between silver and gold

I will be trying again

If you go to www.roada.org.uk all the local RoSPA groups are listed with contact details. Some areas are more prolific than others when it comes to bikes.

Diamond advanced is the Driving Instructors Association advanced course and is run by members of the DIA. It is about the same level as the L test with a few extras thrown in, but will qualify at the same level as an IAM pass or RoSPA bronze, simply becuase all the organisations had to agree a common standard about 3 years ago.

DIA is introducing a bike test in conjunction with the DSA, but those I have spoken to who are in the know have laughed it off as a bit of a joke test, but I cannot speak from experience!

Ah, that makes allot more sense, as far as i'm aware car examiners have to have done this, bizzarely driveing instructors dont need to have done any form of advanced training, just to be above average standard... from what i've seen from one or two instructors, wouldn't let them drive a shopping trolley.. Rolling Eyes

Jay, if you go to do it in the spring give me a shout too as I'm all for doing it as well.

I e-mailed the Rospa people earlier this year, but work and other stuff got in the way of actually meeting up with them and doing anything.

Where did you do the rideout Mr C? Was it around here? (Local?)

we met at the Little Thief at Holdingham

A17 to first exit, past Digby to Metheringham

on to Billinghay, turn left through Coningsby

turn left to Woodhall Spa


that's it


unusual not to be some town work in there but I think they use the conditions as a guide where to go

Congrats on passing the test.
I signed up with the BikeSafe lot at NEC so I think that gets me an introduction to the local IAM.
Will wait to see when they get in touch in Spring.

Nice rideout from those routes you mentioned. Done that sort of area a few times, usually on the way back from Cadwell for a longer ride.
