ZX7R exhaust question

Do I need this part that connects the 1st and 4th exhaust header?

That box is effectively a resonance chamber.It increases the volume of the exhaust at low gas speed but at higher gas speeds it is bypassed so changing the volume.Quite often the cams and carb jetting are set for that type of exhaust.

Is there not a pipe interconnecting downpipes 2 and 3?

Thank you, and there's not. The 2nd and 3rd pipe is ''free''. I've seen many after market exhaust for the zxr without the ''resonance chamber'' so I had to ask. With out the ''chamber'' it'd be easier for me to sand paper the exhaust and paint it. It also makes the exhaust removal harder.
