How do you choose an exhaust?

Im thinking of getting a new exhaust next year (saving my pennies) I want to bring on a bit more noise and lose the big boxy stock can slung under my XJ6. How do I go about choosing one from all the manufacturers out there?

ebay XJ exhaust, find one, youtube xj akrapovic/art/stock cans and see what you like.

Cheapest one. It'll sound 10x better than stock anyway. At least for my bike, having a twin under seat exhaust makes the Akra and Leo's very expensive, so went for the one costing half the price.

But all the manufacturers make them look good, how do you go up eeighing one against another.

Get along to the Motorcycle Live show, natter to the reps on the stands, filter out the gems from the bullshitters and haggle yourself a bargain.

When it was at Ally Pally I walked in with "must buy exhaust" top of the to-do list and walked out with a Carbon Can Co titanium end can and stainless link pipe for £100.

I looked at the most well known 5 exhausts for my bike, scorpian, akrapovic, beowulf , arrow & MTC. I listened to them on youtube, looked at pictures and read loads of owners reviews then made my choice which I'm still happy with.

I bought a £50 used scorpion on ebay with a dent in it, cut it in half & removed all the fluffy shit. I then riveted it back together & got nicked after a few months of hooning & fined.

Was good.

Crieria for can selection,

1. Under £100?
2. geniuine increase in performance? if not, skip & continue to no.3
3. noisiest thing on the market.

Is it easily repaired after a crash?
Is it cheap?

Ideally - is it light?

If you just want loud and light - keeping cutting bits off the standard one until it meets requirements .

I personally think it's difficult to "audition" a can using youtube - but if you have your PC or laptop linked to good speakers (speakers you've 'learned' and can understand how many extra frequencies they add - e.g. more bass or more treble, etc.) then I suppose it's easier. But it will depend on the kind of microphone used to record the can in the first place - which let's face it will be an internal potato mic on some dude's phone.

No. By far the best way to get an idea of the can you want is to get out there and listen - this is a bit easier for me cos I live not too far away from Squires where there are literally hundreds of bikes on wednesdays and thursdays in season. Seaways is useful in that respect too.

The only other option I can think is to go to your bike's dedicated forum and see what's popular and try and understand why it's popular. This is kind of what I did. Ended up buying a can by Fuel which with the baffle out is so fucking ace. Loads of low, deep rumble at idle, some hilarious popping, slurping and banging on the overrun, plus an angry bellowing over 4 thou. So much fun.

Whatever you go for, you need to make sure it has a decat pipe or there is a way to remove the cat otherwise it will just look slightly better and hardly change sound or tone at all.
