Hi im new to the site.
i have a xj600 diversion 94.

Huge problem.. its running on 1 and 4 cylinder but not 2 and 3.
loom has been chopped about. i have changed the grey wire incase it was broken.

Need to make sure if the wires are in the right places on the cdi.

Anyone have any pics of the plug with the wires so i can make sure its all right.

and also should i be getting voltage from the coil through the grey wire?

thanks

It may well be the coil or the pickup. If there is only the one pickup for the one pulse per rev, then see if by switching the coils the fault moves with the switchover.

May sound silly but what's the pickup? i have 12v from the red/white once you turn the key on both coils. But i tryed swapping things round and didn't make any difference.

I tryed putting the grey onto the other coil and testing for spark but didnt have anything. even though i replaced the hole wire. but... when i tested the coil that wasnt working it still wasnt working so im a bit lost as once all back 1&4 run but again nothing from 2&3

The pickup is a sensor which monitors the rotation of the crank. Every time that a tab passes the sensor, it will trigger and the plugs will spark.

Has the problem recently started or did you buy the bike with this problem?

Before delving down into the pickup coils, consider the ignition coils. There are two coils, each with two HT leads coming off. One coil handles cylinders 1+4, the other handles 2+3. Try swapping the coils and their respective HT leads. If the problem moves, you have a suspect coils or LT wiring.

Coils are cheap. I just bought a new pair for my XJ650 for about £35 on ebay. Shame it uses the silly design where the HT leads are moulded in.

Coils also need to have a good power supply. Make sure the (low tension) wires are properly connected and that the connectors are clean - a little corrosion here can make a big difference. The coils probably earth through the frame, so make sure that the frame mounting points are clean and corrosion free.

Hiya thanks for the advice. I brought the bike as a non runner as the person who had it before had it as a project as it has been ratted.
Cleaned carbs out and check the normal stuff incase air leaks etc and all is good.
So fresh fuel and she started after a few turns once carbs had filled up. But 2&3 have never run. plugs were wet so checked spark and nothing.
I swapped the orange with the grey on the coil and still nothing through coil. I checked for spark and no spark on either leads So.. i have just brought a new coil and will fit it this afternoon and put an update on. Cross my fingers this works then i can get on with un ratting the bike lol.

Is there any differance in cdi unit from my 94 to the 98 etc? thanks
