Good afternoon! Mr. Green

After having a front blow out I decided to get 2 new tyres and tubes mostly for peace of mind.

After taking the old tyres off I found the inside of the wheels to be quite rusty but a quick Google search told me this is quite normal and as long as they are still solid.

I wire brushed them with a drill attachment and they are looking loads better now but one place is quite deep rust and another has eaten right through the rim. I was after some advice as to how worried I should be about it. I intend to hammerite the inside of the rims and the spokes to protect them in the future.

Few pics:

After, with my finger showing the hole.

Thanks in advance for any help / advice.

Joe.

I wouldn't be happy with that.

First picture didn't look too bad but the second one tells me the rim is fucked. There is a sharp edge that'll tear the tube and I'd worry about the spokes pulling through the thin metal. Spoked wheels flex and bend in use so that hole will get bigger.

Crying or Very sad

Ok thanks. I didn't consider it flexing. Do you think its repairable?

On a similar note, when I first got the bike, I wondered about swapping the wheels and fork legs and using disc brakes. I imagine this would be easier on the front than the back.

Has anyone done anything similar?

Thanks.

Repairable? No. Replaceable, yes.

You would either need a replacement wheel (new or second hand) or a replacement rim building onto your existing hub.

What bike?

Wheel rims rely on hoop strength and that one has lost most of it. Definitely one for the scrap bin.
