Browsing bikes for sale as you and I've run a few insurance quotes for fire blades and R1's. Older models say below an 02. The prices come out at £750 and above.

I've been riding with a full license for 12 months and have 1years NCB and I'm 32. I currently ride a bandit 600.

I don't really want a litre, just that I like looking like I'm sure we all do.

When did the insurance allow you guys to consider a bigger bike?

I'm 48 and I own 4 bikes, a Kawasaki zr7, a zx6r, a Yamaha thunderace 1002cc, and a old cx 500, not one costs more than 100 pounds a year tpft to insure and I have zero ncd as I came back to riding this year after some 10 yrs out the saddle.

I can insure litre bikes for sub £300 as a 22 year old male with 2 years NCB.

I think some of the more daft ones like the S1000RR are quite a bit more.

For comparison the CB500 was £110.

All TPO/TPFT (whichever was cheapest).

edit: Just had a check.

HONDA CBR 900 RR FIREBLADE 929cc
£289.91

KTM 1190 RC8 1148cc
£585.28

BMW S1000 RR 999cc
£621.32

Got a bizarre price this year. TPFT, 4yrs protected NCB, 37, K1 GSXR1000 - £52 for the year.

Kept thinking they were gonna back out on it but when they called me up a couple of days after taking it online it was just to offer me extra legal cover which considering it only added about £30 for the year thought i might as well Smile

The "popular" Thou's will cost more due to their wacky statistics.

Try something like an 03 Tuono, mine was cheaper than a 600 and that was with no NCB and licence for 5 months.
IIRC it was about £260 and i'm 35.

I've found it's more down to where you live, rather than how old you are.

Most expensive quote I can get at the moment is £450, that's for a brand new S1000R and I'm 23.

The blade is currently costing me under £200.

£350 to insure my Bandit 600 for another year come February, that will be with 1 years NCB, to insure the 1200 it's coming in at about £600. Yet I ran a quote for a thundercat, that was coming in at nearly a grand, a CBR600F was about £1500, and a ninja 636 was nearly two grand. Shocked

Which is why I will be getting a Bandit 1200 next year. Thumbs Up

Whatever you get, it's spare change compared to car insurance.
I remember being 17, paying £2000 to insure my 1.2 Corsa and doing a quote for a fireblade as a newbie who'd just passed their test and it coming back at £1400

Shocked

Literally the fastest thing I could afford with an engine and it was cheaper?!

...Still don't have one though Crying or Very sad

Also depends massively on the bike.

My Futura cost me like £100 for the year, whereas the SP1 was £300ish if I remember right. Bit daft given that the Futura would be monumentally more expensive to fix after pretty much any crash and was only maybe 5-10bhp down on the SP1.

Motor insurance really does border on being a scam at times Neutral

You do know you've basically paid £30 for them to offer you a no-win no-fee solicitor who they'll get a massive kick back off if you take a case out? Confused

(Ok, I'm guessing you didn't!)

bike insurance has always been very affordable for me.

1st year riding (late 20s) my 600 cost me £350 then 2nd year went down to £169 and when i got the blade in my 3rd year onwards it has been around £200-£240.

so yeh.. for me bike insurance has never been expensive in my opinion (other than my 1st year but then you expect that at least)

I'm 20 had a license for 3 years. Can insure fireblades and r1s for about £250 TPFT. That's with certain companies though, my current insurers said they don't insure under 30's on litre bikes ( well over a certain power but same thing really)

So I guess it's the same as everything else to do with insurance, complete luck and a joke!

Insurers want around £1300 for any sports 600, sports thou's are uninsurable yet they'll insure me on a turbo b-king for around £550 a year...go figure!

Edit: Forgot to add, 20 year old, licence held for a year and 3 years NCB with 6 points ahem

Actually from experience, below certain threshold you can't get no win no fee. Threshold varies depending on if there's an injury claim or not.
If you have legal cover you can get a solicitor paid for in the event you're below he threshold.

Also, legal cover gets you representation in court if a disputed blame goes that far.

thanks guys. some very interesting prices.

I live in a good area (I think) LS19

Bandit insurance costs are fine. Maybe its the bikes I'm looking at although that doesn't seem to be the case for others.

I should also add that when I'm browsing i typically only use the bike insurer for comparisons, maybe i should cast my net wider.

Oh definitely, I've found moneysupermarket the best for me on bikes and cars.

I can insure a ZX9R for £300, while a corsa is around £700 to insure.

I'm kinda realising the problem with my less-than litre is the only time I'm enjoying myself is when I'm trying to kill myself. Part of me thinks a proper 600 or a 750 would be the way forward.

I think it was Rogerborg that has said before that insurance just seems to be a "random number generator" and I tend to agree with that sometimes. I think some people are just lucky with it and others get shafted.

Personally I always seem to have been cursed with never being able to get half reasonable quotes; however, have been running quotes in anticipation of next Feb/March when my bikes are due for renewal. My 500 literally drops to about 1/3rd of last years premium (will hopefully have 1 years no claims but didn't think it would make that much difference).

Back when I was looking for a first big bike I had my eye on a CBR 400, was getting quotes for that at around £400 say (I was 20 at the time). Add my dad to the policy (49 at the time) and they won't give me a quote.

They're just making it up as they go along.

There do seem to be certain times where insurance takes a decent drop. 5 years no claims and 25 yo seems to be it. Also about 5 yrs experience helps.

for me

2012 ZX-10r

26yo

8 yr no claims

£251 fully comp
