Hey All

Having owned my SV for almost 1 year now, it's due for an MOT.
This being my first bike MOT as my previous YBR was exempt Laughing

So I know what the MOT does and doesn't cover, I don't think my SV will have any issues.
But I'm questioning myself, does it need a "service" ?
Being just over 1 year into my motorbike career, all knowledge of these routine checks come from 6 years of owning a car.
So when I get my car serviced, it's generally the same crap they carry out where ever I go.
Yet with a bike, crazy terms like valve clearances gets chucked around. It seems I'm expected to know what these are and when my SV needs them, when to be honest, as hard as I try I can't keep up.
Crying or Very sad

So my question to you BCF
My 54 plate, 25-26k SV650, how can I tell what additional work needs carrying out?
An oil & filter change was carried out around July, cleaned the pads and calipers, chain cleaned, lubed and tensioned as required.
The bike is running sweet, with no issues popping up Rolling Eyes

So .... Yea

its more a mileage related than time based,
how many miles since oil change??
you really should oil your chain every week,
valve clearances should be done every 15000 miles,
its a big job if youve never done it before, (cams out job if you need to change shims)
oil id do every 4-6000 miles depending on how you ride

Valves should have been checked at 18k according to the manual, however if running perfect why spend £200 plus just to be told they were within tolerance? (If they even checked) how's your cam chain?

These motors are fairly loud and rattle a lot compared to a IL4 but you would notice a cam chain rattle arising. Other than that, oil and filter. Air filter, sparkplugs and pads.

I've cleaned the air filter but not changed over any of the plugs.
The bike sounds and runs as good as the day I picked her up.
The SV is for fun, I have a car for every day stuff.
So I doubt I've covered any great deal of millage, a few long distance runs and a trip to France around July. Under 5000 miles for certain.

It's more about maintenance and keeping everything in work order for when I do finally stretch my legs. Something I've not managed to do this year Thumbs Down

No one likes a show off Laughing

I could list the lame excuses for not covering more miles ...
But I'm still happy I accomplished riding into France and Belgium, starting from Cornwall Smile

I was meeting up with other riders from BCF, so I went to Folkestone.
300 miles from home Wink
It's funny, I was only talking to a customer today who rides through Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland then home via Paris when he tours.
Sounded like a nice route despite having to pick the time of year right or the roads are iced up Razz

Wasn't sure what to expect from Belgium, Northern France and Luxembourg as I thought they would be mostly flat and not while better than our roads, not up tree with the biking roads of the alps and Black Forest, and while they aren't, they were still pretty good.

:D you have a woman in your life????????

i presume you have the owners manual for your bike ( the suzi, 2 wheel variety ) with a service schedual, so know when the brake fluid etc was last changed........or should have been.......

little and often.....

leave your woman with no regular tlc and see what happens........

leave your suzi with no regular tlc and she'll show you.....

both are just as expensive and enjoyable.............

with the human variety needing and occational bunch of flowers for what they have to go thru.....

all we do is butcher our face once a day.....some of use dont even do that to often....... :D :karma:

but when the woman is on the back of the suzi hugging you ( or punching you in the kidnies for riding like a twat ) its all great :D
