Hey,

Thought I would finally make a post or two as you guys have helped me get through work the last week or so by reading through the shit on here. So thanks for that anything to get out of actually working lol.

Now my question Is I'm planing on doing all my tests and things next month. Now do I really need to spend so much money on DSA or can I just book cbt, theory and then the test?

I've been driving a car for the last 8,9 years so I'm not a novice on the road. I rode a 50cc moped for 6 months and had a little play about on mates geared pitbike. So I understand the basics.

So do you think I would be alright or is there things that I would pick up on that course. Do many people miss the course and just do the test? Reckon I would be alright just never really been on a powerfully bike before so don't really know what to expect from it.

Thanks

It's DAS (Direct Accelerated Access), not DSA (Driving Standards Agency).

If you don't know what to expect, how can you expect to know how to pass? Wink

Knowing the basics of bike control is one thing, but performing the checks, tasks and procedures in the right order is what they want to see to tick the checklist. They would explain a lot of this on the CBT, but I'd not say this would get you up to test standard.

Assuming you want a full license, not just a crappy 125cc-only-A1 license, you have to take the test on a full sized (600cc) bike.

That's tricky without going through a school, because you'll need to buy/beg/borrow a large bike from somewhere and then get it insured. We've heard that it's possible to do, but most insurers won't even look at it - insuring a 600 for a provisional/learner? Uh huh, no we don't do that sir.

DAS course is certainly the least hassle in that respect.

As above. I'd been driving for 13 years when I passed my bike test last year, there's a LOT of things you need to learn that are different.

Don't get me wrong I'm sure it helps a lot to have some road sense, like that feeling you get that the bloke indicating isn't actually going that way - times that by about 50 and you have the senses you need for safe riding!

Do the CBT at least and go from there, maybe you'll find it all very 'obvious' when he's telling you stuff, if not maybe you could just book a 2 hour lesson or something. You might be a natural and it all seems clear and common sense, you might not. We don't know that and neither do you.

Do DAS.

50cc scooter and a pitbike are nothing like a DAS bike. It's a bit like having lessons in a Corsa and sitting your test in a Porsche 911. You might take to it like a duck to water but chances are you might shit yourself Laughing

Yea knew it was somthing like that, you knew what I ment lol

Yea I did a CBT about 5 years ago now so been through all that before and didn't have any problems just kind of got on and picked it up all quite easily but I can understand a 600+ being different but then a lot of people say it's only the weight you have to get used to. I just don't want to spend that kind of money on something I don't really need. Did the same with driving did a week intensive and turned out I really only needed a few lessons.

Yea it will be the full licence none of this weak cc crap lol

Ah that might be a problem I never thought about, I just assumed would be able to book one with a bike, thinking about it though probably not. Won't be getting my bike for another month or Two so might have to spend the extra.

Oh yea don't get me wrong just because I can drive I don't automatically think I can ride. Just saying I know what I'm doing on the road so that will be less to worry about

Yea that was another one of my thoughts to do a lesson or two and see where I am at after that.

Yea I know lol, just giving a bit of information about my past. Hate to say it but I did do my lessons in my mum's friends Porsche when I was learning lol it was quite the downgrade going from that to a colt for my test lol, but all cars are pretty much the same to drive. Bikes I would of thought are the same just haven't done any road riding on a decent bike just a moped.

Well thanks for the help and info, I guess the generally response is cough up and do it lol. will have a better look tonight. So excited should of done all this year's ago!!

A car you can't control will just spin and maybe hit shit. A bike will highside and fire you off it into orbit Laughing

Honestly... have some lessons. It can't hurt and you'll only be a better rider for it.

haha cheers for that, hopefully i will never have to find that out!

Yea Ive sent a message to a company close by so just waiting for a response off them and cant sort something out.

You're right though, always was the plan to have a few lessons if possible. Just cant comprehend spending 700 odd quid on a course when i can do it a hell of alot cheaper but will see what this company says and see if i can haggle a good price off them.

Lol, it stands for Direct Access Scheme you numpty! Otherwise what you're suggesting would be shortened to DAA Wink It is accelerated access but that's not what DAS stands for.

OP, the course should cost about £500. When I did mine years ago, the company offered a £100 discount if you did it October-Feb when it's their quietist time of the year. It's well worth doing, you won't be fully prepared or the road and a big bike without having out some time in with a qualified instructor Idea

It's usually a half-decent plate of something - rice and chicken curry, fish pie and potatoes, sausages and mash, chicken leg and chips etc.. and on Fridays, fish and chips! Slice of cake for extra 50p and usually free muffins on the go too, as well as slices of bread.

Can't complain, given that the rest of the shops in Central London charge something like £3 for a sandwich...

[/offtopic]

Back to thread - the training is worth it. If not just to pass the test, but in the long run of safety on the road too Thumbs Up

It's the same as learning to drive, you can just drive around with your mum then go in for your test but the reality is your mum will have taught you to reverse out of a side street onto an A road while dodging small children which won't pass your test Laughing A proper instructor will obviously teach you the correct way of doing things. My car instructor used to get on at me for driving with one hand on the gear stick, saying that it's not what they want on the test. Once I'd passed, he didn't give a shit (I did Pass Plus with him) as I had the pink photocard.
