Fitted fog lights to the front of the bike on a switch. For the past few MOTs I have removed the lights as I was under the impression that they must be fitted with an indicator that they are on, ie a small light on the dash or switch to show if the lights are on or off. Is this true as I don't really want to take the lights off again for the next MOT as it is a ball ache to do so.

Also do they have to be directed in a certain way like your headlight beam does?

Can I just leave them on the bike and just cover them over with a bag/gaffa tape?

Good question - I was about to ask exactly the same on a car forum as my Mini has the front spotlights fitted in place, but not currently wired up. MOT due next month.

They have the Wipac covers on them though...

Just tape them up for the MOT.

Don't know if a tell-tale is a requirement but can you see them from the seated position? In which case drilling a hole in the top of one of the light shells and putting a small warning light in the hole, wired ito the bulb supply would count as a warning light. A warning light doesn't have to be on the dash, just has to be where you can see it. Or you can get light-up switches which light when on.

Hell, I once had a bike that had a small hole in the top of the flasher casing with a bit of transparent green plastic in it. That was the indicator tell-tale light. Didn't even have its own bulb.

I've been reading - it seems auxiliary lights are not part of the MOT test, hence can't fail.

However it is the law that any light fitted to your vehicle should be working.

So it seems - by the law; they should work, but for the MOT; they're not included in the test.

aren't the ones on your Mini a style thing and not intended to be functional?

No, there were fully functioning spotlights fitted to Mini Coopers coming out of the factory.

I've fitted Wipac spots (x2) to my Sprite but have not got round to wiring them up, although I do have the full wiring kit with inline resistors etc. They always have the Wipac covers on them currently.

Hi

Not sure there are any MOT rules for beam direction, warning lights, etc, for a bike MOT.

However there quite probably are lighting regulations which could render them illegal. But the chances of finding a copper who understood the rules in detail on something fairly unusual like that are slim.

All the best

Keith

About 50p each from Maplin or a quid from Halfords, last I looked, I think? If the switch is a self-fit job, might be as well just swap it out for one of those. The indicator light (probably an LED these days) draws mere milliamps, and if it's just activating a relay anyhow won't therefore interfere with the operation of the fogs themselves.
