Hey everyone!

Birdyboyuk here.

Well, last Saturday, I completed my CBT, so now officially certified to ride up to a 125! Woohoo!

I've been driving my car for approx 11 years now, and due to separation from my wife, my mid-life crisis has set in, and well, here I am! (I'm not even 30 yet!)

I decided to get on 2 wheels as it will give me my independence, I can do my own thing without having to worry about what anyone else thinks and just have a bloody good time riding in the wind!

I do have a motorbike, donated from my Dad - a CZ125!
Is this a good bike?? Confused

Oh, that's an Austin Big 7 under the car cover by the way! Very Happy

I need to set the ignition timing on this in order to get it going properly, then tax'd, MOT'd and insured, however, I'd much rather buy a bike that is ready to go! I'm eager to get out there already!

I'm quite keen on the Yamaha YBR125 as that is what I learnt on, but anything else you recommend that is similar? (I'd like to stick to that style, or maybe a custom)

I've seen some similar bikes, such as LF125, SYM and also Lexmoto. Are these your typical chinese cheapo's?

I'd happily go out tomorrow and buy a bike on the credit card, but could only afford up to £1k really...

So, any thing you suggest, I will will greatly receive!

Avoid the credit card.
If you only have a grand to spend?
Clean the points on that CZ. Buy a new condensor and spark-plug for it. Clean the petrol tank out. Clean the carb. Make sure the brakes and lights work. Bung it in for an MOT and have some fun.
Answer to your question, "is the CZ125 a good bike" is, I have to say 'No'... but they are as simple as a village idiot, tough as old boot and a lot of learner-bike for your Dad's money!
It will probably be slow, and unreliable, and hassle to live with mixing petroil every time you fill up; it'll probably be dirty, smelly and not as comfortable as you'd like, as well as having some interesting 'handling'... but give or take, it wont be much worse than most sub-£500 second hand learner bikes, and ONE thing is for fuck-sure... it'll beat a generic Chinky-bike for almost everything, with the much added bonus it will still be worth at least what you haven't paid for it when you are done with it!

1 quick question...for the MOT, does the bike need to have at least one mirror? I have one for it, but don't think its the correct one, but it fits!
Have done a quick search and it doesn't seem to mention it...thought best I check here with the experts...

Surprised Tef missed this one.

You're not certified to ride a 125, in fact, you have no license to ride anything, you have merely validated your provisional entitlement.

Use the free bike to get on the road, and then get yourself a license!

Mirrors not needed for MOT. But if you do decide to use it/them, it must not be cracked, as that IS an MOT failure..

Nope... he has a certificate, therefore is certified... he didn't say he was 'licensed', or had a 125 licence, so all correct as far as I can see.

Although it looks like a relic of the 1960's... that bike is on an L-Plate... (Fitting for a 125, hugh?) 1994/95, which is important for Construction & Use regs, as older vehicles have certain 'grandad-rights' that allow them exemptions where stuff wasn't a requirement when built. Lots of exemptions exist for bikes built in olden days, but unfortunately, that one, doesn't get very many.

Basic rule for that bike is that if it was fitted as OE equipment, it ought to still have it; and if it is fitted, it ought to work correctly for MOT.

It will need a head-lamp, with main and dipped beam, as well as a side-light; will need a brake lamp that works off both brake levers; a continuous tone horn, and indicators that flash between once and twice per second; and no electrical equipment must 'interfere' with the operation of any other. Ie: when you press the brake, and the brake lamp comes on, the headlamp mustn't dim or go out!

Tip; set the idle a bit on the high-side before presenting the thing for test; I suspect it has AC 'direct' lighting, with the headlamp and stop lamp powered direct from the generator; setting a high idle means that when 25W stop lamp comes on, 35w headlamp ought to still get a few watts! A new battery to help out the other bits of kit may be worthwhile too.

There is a 'cheat'; an exemption for machines modified 'predominantly for off-road-use'... its close enough.... remove rear foot-pegs; exemption requires it must only be capable of carrying the rider and no passengers... foot-pegs are other wise mandatory, and again, if fitted as OE equipment, must be there and be in safe and serviceable condition. If there is a seat-strap or pillion grab-rail remove that also; then the indicators can be removed; and the switch taped over... a more stringent tester would have to fail you for having an indy switch that didn't turn on any indicators! WHOLE system must be removed, not just the lamps!

Mirror? Technically, if fitted as original equipment, should be there for test, BUT its not a requirement for a motorcycle to have mirrors, you can claim ommission as legitimate modification.

Headlight has been put back on and all lights are working, apart from on the dash for high beam and indicators, but could be just bulbs.

What are your thoughts on a Pioneer Nevada XF125L-4B?
There is one on eBay for £550, which I see as a bargain, my kind of bike, and it's ready to drive away! Needs a bit of cosmetic work done, but most of it a bit of t-cut can shift...
I have said to my Dad, he can have his CZ back, and that way we can go ride out together with his brother too...

Auction ends Saturday! It's done just over 5000 miles. MOT valid until Jan next year, no advisories from previous MOT. Tax until April. Comes with some spares too...

Thoughts?

It's a sheep in wolf's clothing. More specifically, a chinese sheep in the clothing of an American diesel dike. Ludicrous styling issues aside, it will probably be plagued by rust and a host of reliability issues. I mean, I appreciate Sons of Anarchy is in its sixth season - but is that really any excuse?? No of course not. You must re-engage brain immediately.

Get another £500 and buy a CG or a YBR.

I had a CZ. It wasnt road legal and was used on waste ground, It had been treated terribly and still worked. It got me used to the basics of gears. If it works and is road legal then just use it to practice on and get your DAS done.

Ok...I will avoid this bike then! lol

Struggling to find a YBR for around £500, although would love one of these!

A few CG 125's around, so will further look into that.

How about a Yamasaki YM125? Brand new on eBay, gotta build it yourself though! That's only £600... cheap CG125 copy? Not built to last I guess...

Avoid the Chinese bikes - although Roger will tell you the AJS is likely from the same factory as the YBR so that's possibly the one exception

To get a YBR in reasonable nick you'll need more like £800-£1000 fella. I struggled to find one, in fact it took nearly 6 weeks and 10 viewings in total.

Another contender, rarer but they are out there for reasonably cheap money, is the Suzuki GN125.

I had the YBR, it was perfect for learning on. If you go for one then make sure you upgrade the rubber, makes a big difference.

If I was to do the learner thing again, id go for something like a Varadero due to the road presence.

Depends on you budget really.

Get that See-Zed up to scratch and GET OUT THERE!
Share the thing with your Dad, put the £500 into training & tests.
You CAN get 'decent' bikes in the big bike world for £500, and they dont have to be monsters.
Plenty of stuff out there in the humdrum commuter market, that doesn't appeal to the life-stylers or the boy-racers; that Learners & Car Drivers cant ride 'cos they dont have a licence, that is utterly unloved and cheap as chips and pennies to buy, run and insure.
125's are just a starting place; a good way to get some early miles experience under your belt; and do what the L-Plate is for, 'prepare for test'. 12 weeks on one of regular riding, and you ought to be ready for test.
Unfortunate, now, testing on your own 125 only gets you an A1 125 only licence, so if you want access to the wider world of all biking has to offer, 125 test doesn't do much for you; (but for £90 for two mods, it's good practice, and says you CAN pass tests, for when you do it on a DAS bike) BUT that 'Time on a Tiddler' is still worthwhile, and if you want full-fat licence, means when it comes to doing a DAS course, you ought to be streaks ahead, and instead of starting from scratch and paying £30 per hour or whatever to have some duffer watch you wobble on a borrow bike, for days on end, you ought to be pretty much there, and know the ropes, and only have to pay them to let you get familiar with the bigger bike and brush up your technique.
That little CZ looks PERFECT for the gig... GO SORT IT!

Then pair of you can set out to source a couple of styarter-cruisers, if thats what takes your fancy.
Yamaha 535 Viagra... sorry Virago is defacto choice.... they can be picked up from £500 up, though unlikely get a great example.
Kawasaki make a 250 Eliminator, that is a bargain basement cruiser; that you could probably pick up a tidy road ready example of for budget; or there are things like the Yamaha SR250 single, or Suzuki GN, that are humble baked bean budget cruiserfied-commuters; for which £500 is about top book!
BUT licence opens up ALL the options, and that neglected little CZ is your passport to it all... SCRUB IT UP, sort it out and PUT IT TO USE!
Close e-bay... stop torturing yourself, and GET TO IT!

Find £750 and you can buy my Varadero with 1yrs MOT on it. It has high miles and isn't mint, but for the money you are spending, its a lot of bike.

Fuel injection model, 2007.

Under 80,000 miles, fairly close though.

Comes with a new clutch, can fit beforehand if needed.

No photos as I don't photo my bikes that often Laughing Can possibly get one though.

Has been crashed, BIG scuff down the front right hand side but its only the looks that are affected.

The tyres are <1000 miles old.
Exhaust is solid.
MOT expired a few days ago but a years MOT is no issue.

Well, an update for you all...my Dad has decided he will lend me the money to buy a bike, ready to go, interest free!
Oh how I love the bank of mum & dad! lol

I'm going to set a £1k limit, so currently looking at a CG125...have seen one within my budget, just!

Honda CG 125 2008 with 8600 miles. been very well looked after and garaged, had a recent oil change and valve clearances reset. has a topbox/ rack and Givi Windscreen included.

From the pic it looks excellent. Screen and box, disc brake version, quite new really, plus it's in the right colour. Perfect bike by the looks of it.

That's only £400 more than the Yamasaki in a crate, but its a 100% better bike.

The only tiny thing (difficult to see from pic) is tread depth on tyres. Heading into winter, they look maybe a little past their best, but I could be way wrong and it's definitely not a reason to not buy it. Looks spot on really.

Engines are solid.

Only faults:
Chrome and pipes like to rust
Bike is light so the wind blows you about
Be lucky to reach 60mph which causes lorries to overtake (scary)

Hmm...ok...after asking more questions, bike does not come with documents. It does come with 2 keys though...
How much of a problem could this be?

Was MOT'd in April and flew through...

Makes me a bit more concerned now...
