Just a quick question, wondering if anyone would know if i could fit an extra radiator to my MTX? i have a brand new Gilera Runner/Piaggio zip radiator and would like to fit it to my mtx as mine is a bit battered.

il post a link to the radiator id like to use and if anyone has any ideas about what hoses going where id be grateful if they would let me know!

Thanks!

Why do you need the extra radiator?

Generally it shouldn't be too much hassle, but you do need to consider putting the waterpump under more strain.

However, at this time of year you generally shouldn't need any more cooling - so if it's because of an underlying issue, it'd be much better to fix that!

It sure is possible but why would you do it?

EDIT: If it goes too hot, then there's a problem somewhere. Extra radiator would result in too cold engine = worse performance. Thumbs Up

ahhh your right i see what you mean about the water pump being under strain, any way i could just replace my standard (bent/leaky) one with the one i already have? as sort of an upgrade? the new rad i have from the runner/zip is from a 12 plate bike so surely its ability to cool will be much greater?

Any thoughts on where i would put the coolant pipes as in what orientation?

The best way to do it is: out going/from the engine/exhaust coolant pipe goes to the top of the radiator and the in going/intake coolant pipe goes out of the bottom of the radiator.

I'm not aware that radiator technology has particularly moved on over the years. Maybe it has, but I've never seen any hype going on about "20% smaller radiator resulting in 300g total 'wet' weight loss" or anything.
A cooling system is designed to run the bike at the correct temperature; that's not 'cold'.

On race bikes, even with standard radiators people would some times tape them up when racing in winter because their bikes were getting too cold.
On a bike that has a cooling system that can cope with 20mph in 30 degree heat - when you're doing 130mph in 5 degrees, it can work a bit too efficiently, so you have to actually make it worse so the temp stays up, despite the bike being ridden hard.
More of a case on people with big race-specific radiators.

I don't know the radiators in question, but it's rare they are THAT different. Check that both of them have the same number/type of holes and go from there Smile.

I wouldn't bother trying to improve your cooling specifically unless you have overheating issues not related to your current leaky radiator.

ahhh i know what you mean! im going to mount it up tommorow go for a run for about 20 minutes then come back and take a temperature reading of the barrel, and obviously il do the same with the old one before hand so i have something to compare to, just a bit of a mess about/experiment really!

So the hose coming from the engine goes to the top, and the hose going into the water pump should come from the bottom of the rad?

What about those 2 smaller hoses on top? my original rad only has one smaller diameter pipe at the top? i think its a leakoff pipe, should i just join them together using a Y piece and lead it to the original overflow tank?

Thanks

A quick google shows that one should go to an expansion chamber and the other will probably be a return for when the thermostat is closed (err, I think?)

you want to run two rads?

Funny i tried this the other week, i have overheating problems in heavy traffic sometimes, i removed the front mudguard, welded a strengthening flatbar inside, drilled front mudflap and fitted an MX radiator sideways, hooked it up so it would feed on one rad, then dump to the second rad, then dumped it back to the pump, which the fed the engine, then back to the first rad.

Worked well. But it was fugly so i removed it. Was a bit too 'rat' for my liking. Laughing

hi,
i look forward to hearing the outcome of this.....
cooling system was only weak point on my mtx, it tended to get a bit hot, like a lot of 2t's but the radiator didnt do much good & seemed to only cool down when going at full pelt, so acted like it was air cooled.
cheers,
GAZ
