Hi guys,

I am looking at buying my first big bike after getting my full A licence two weeks ago. I've got my 125 scooter to sell, but I bought it new and I've still got about a grand to go until I've repaid the finance. By selling it I reckon I'd make about 2K, so I could use half to pay the rest of it and put down the other half as a deposit for a new bike. I've laid my eyes on the Yamaha RJ600 ABS, 0% interest on finance and it's a machine I tried and liked very much as I did my DAS on it. What do you guys think about the bike? Also would you suggest buying new as a first big bike?

Thanks!

The buyer will be buying "your" scoot from the finance company, not you (unless they're a total spanner). Anything left over goes in your pocket.

No idea what an "RJ600" is (XJ600?), but no, I would not buy new as a first bike, and I especially wouldn't do it on finance, 0% or otherwise.

But I'm a bit peculiar. The country runs on the never-never. Do as thou wilt, you'll be hard pushed to buy a bad modern Japanese bike.

It is an XJ6, I've been looking at so many bikes that I got confused! I am thorn between second hand and new, we'll see what happens... The XJ6 seems a good value bike, especially the ABS version, and it could be a good first bike I think.

Thanks for your help!

Why not grab a used bike for your £1k and sell the moped and use the remaining cash for security devices.

Plenty of good value used XJ6s around, very user friendly and good looking. I looked at new but considering I am gonna move on in a year or two, new is just a waste - you cop the 20% VAT on top of the initial depreciation. As for warranty there is not much that should go wrong if you pick up one that has full dealer service history.
