Clothes-wise (assuming that you will continue to ride afterwards)

Decent gloves.
Decent boots.
Decent padded overtrousers
Decent Jacket
Decent helmet.

Your skin and your brain will thank you.

Expect to spend in excess of £500...

I went to my local suzuki dealer and spent £14 on gloves (shit in the wet but really warm all winter, more like ski gloves than bike - fell apart after a year - replaced with £7 leather gloves for the summer). Lid was a Box or Pox if you prefer - £40. Shit logo on it and crappy pattern so got the sticker treatment. Jacket was a Spada n00b special for £60 from Infuckity - had shit reflective white bits on it and crap logos, but I painted over them with hammerite and it looks a bit meaner now. Great jacket though. I love it - has zippable outable inner thermal jacket, which I whipped out over summer. And also armour. It really is ace. Probably be had for £25 on eBay. Boots were £30 from Aldi - warm as owt, and seem okay in the wet. Sometimes just wear trainers though. Trousers - got some £30 Aldi jobs, which are pretty good - but I hardly ever wear 'em. Just wear quilt lined Karrimores. All the clobber together looks fair pikey which is a bit of a downer, but remember - it's not who you are, but who you be blud yeah?

Ive got most of my stuff online to be honest but can be a pain with sizing etc.

Following are just my own recommendations others will maybe disagree.

-Full face helmet. Anything else leaves your chin and face at risk of being cheesegrated Thumbs Down . Dont need to spend a lot, can get decent helmets for 50 quid or so, but make sure it fits, it should be tightly fastened and not 'roll' on your head. I also would never buy second hand as once damaged even from a waist height drop to concrete they can be near useless in an accident.

-Gear, id go one piece or two piece leathers as the abrasion protections better than textiles, but arent waterproof like GOOD textiles so id throw a rainsuit in. Get them with CE approved armour not just shitty foam inserts, and id go back protector ideally also.

-Boots and gloves. Presuming youre riding all year id spend a bit here, wet n cold feet is distracting and uncomfortable. Check out reviews as lots are hit and miss. (Gloves i use many people here said they found useless for example Laughing )

Chain is expensive - get a good almax as most others can be bolt cut so easily theyre barely worth using, but chain it TO something unmovable or itll be dragged away regardless Thumbs Down

Security is about making life as hard as possible for a potential thief.

So... as far as possible from the road, as hard as possible to push to said road (i.e. uphill) As much light as possible (because the bastards don't want to be seen). As a bonus chuck crap in front of the bike that will need to be moved first.

As a last resort a chain of the best quality as possible.

What you really want is the thieving scumbags to think 'Fuck that for a game of soldiers' before they even have to mess with the chain, which they'll probably be able to remove with seconds unless you've spent hundreds on one.

I recently bought a Spada jacket half price from ghost bikes, its a great jacket and for 45 quid a bargain. You can buy decent gear without paying a fortune.

Id say chains are the first and only resort in most cases especially street parked bikes Sad Thumbs Down

Mr gypsy doesnt care of lights, alarms, police sirens - just getting that bike in the van before hes cuffed.

Additonal deterants are always worthwhile, but i wouldnt rely or put hope in them -"every little helps" n all that Razz

Yes I agree. The solution is to not park it on the street. I reverse mine onto the path to my front door.

It's a cumulative effect. The more deterents you put in place, the harder the job is for the thief, the less likely the bike is to be stolen.

Friend has a good method of street parking, cars got large spoked alloys. Almax through the wheel (rarely takes car to work). So unless they try jack it on the hill and dewheel it or take the car too, its fairly secure Laughing

Those 125 cruisers have quite a bit of chrome on them and will be heavier and slower.

So are you a midget with a cleaning fetish?

[edit] Have a look through these.

If you've got the cash then splash away, but keep in mind that your main aim seems to be getting a bigger bike in 6-12 months. So if you do have a common sense switch now is the time to engage it. Wink

Like I said, you spend your money how you want, but I'll add that you're more likely to drop a bike whilst you're learning.
