...how would you fill your time?

Suddenly the emphasis isn't on having more than your neighbour. Because you just can't.

You have the essentials provided for you - food, home, water, enough to exist. You have access to an equal share of public resources - library, Internet, sports facilities, education etc.

So what would you do with your life?

(Preferably don't want this to descend into a standard communism/capitalism debate. That's not what it's about. It's just a theoretical proposition.)

I've never cared how much my neigbour has.

I'd quite like them to have the same or more than me.
Then, not only can I borrow stuff from them, but thieves are just or more likely to go after them Smile.

So, my perfect communist system would still involve lots of toys to spend all my extra free time playing with.

I would mention Startrek, but they often seem a bit short on toys.

I'd join a politics forum and talk about motorbikes.

I'd spend my time improving my piano playing skills...

When I find a piece, I can spend hours and hours playing and perfecting it. Granted it takes 2-3 weeks to get a new piece to performance standard

Right now I'm playing 3 pieces:

Piano sonata no 8 2nd movement

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyelz5Q0Z9w

Chopin Nocturne in E op9 no2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZUw78FXpG4

Claire de Lune

@Fatpies @Oldpink - that's the kind of answers I was hoping for. Karma

I just wonder how people would spend their lives if they lived in a system where the prime motivation was not accumulation of wealth.

Don't get butthurt over my downvote. I'll request it be retracted after you go to every other thread on this 'random banter' subforum and make similarly pointless remarks.

I'd join an underground socialist guerrilla movement, to bring down the state capitalist "communists" and replace it with a proper socialist government. Razz

I'd travel around a bit just visiting places, meeting folk, and trying a few things along the way. Not exactly sure what, would depend on what I came across, but i do like making/fixing things.

My own and many, many others motivation for accumulation of wealth is to do the things I'd like to.

Both fatpies's and oldpink's desires don't require particular wealth so there's no reason this ideal communist system should make any difference?
(Appreciated oldpink's will need a bit of wealth - but I'm led to believe it hasn't been a problem for him at various points at least.)

I`m poor now so changing over to a communist system may? possibly? mean me getting a better bite of the cherry!
Cos I wouldn't have to work so many hours to make a living , I could spend more time on my MZ 250 touring my country. Smile

Join an underground band of an-caps and fight for freedom against the oppressive statist regime.

If people want to be free to live in a perfect communist society they should be free to do so, if people don't want to live in perfect communist society that's fine too.

Wouldn't you?
Or would you have to work just as many, but get a bigger share.
If everyone gets the same, presumably everyone works the same too.
If everyone works the same, it will presumably be judged what is the best number of working hours for the society in general. This may not be what you think is best Smile.

This. An old friend of mine remembered when his country was communist, and he said that no one cared about work or trying hard. Everyone was nicking stuff like building materials etc for their own houses, and nobody stopped them because everyone else was doing the same!

Communism, great in theory until you add humans.

The thing I don't get about it, is how would it be determined who would be a doctor or who would be a street sweeper. You can't do it by lottery as some require more intelligence. But equally what if the really intelligent people are lazy and the above average work really hard. But then the really intelligent people are shoddy doctors, and the above average people are really good accountants (although as I type this I realise maybe accountancy and banking etc wouldn't be possible)

I think personally I'd just be a lazy couch potato and not do anything, if it was provided for me. My work ethic stems from wanting/needing money to do stuff, but if I couldn't do the stuff I wanted because everyone has the same, and if I got the same without doing any work then why would I work hard?

I'm absolutely certain this would not be the case. You'd get bored and find ways to fill the time, you'd realise there was a world of hobbies and things to try, you'd discover, learn, grow, improve, etc.

That's the point I was trying to get at in this thread. There's more to life than working just for the sake of earning!

Again; you don't seem to be talking about communism.
In communism you work for the greater good.

Also; how would the piano be acquired? How would the grow lamps be got?
Would you just be given what you wanted, whenever you wanted?

Maybe I don't mean Communism. I just mean a world where the essentials are provided and we're free to pursue our interests instead. In theory it's possible, too. Of course not everyone can have one of everything. They'd have to wait in line their turn or their share.

I dunno.

Honestly the main point of this was to just get people thinking about how they'd spend their free time if they didn't have to waste it with the whole 'daily grind 9-5' malarkey.

It wasn't really meant to be a GO GO COMMUNISM thread.

IIRC in the USSR you were monitored, and if you showed potential you were scrutinised and tested for your potential.

You did well you got put into a state program.

USSR pilots all had un-natural reflexes and ability to take higher G levels due to this testing.

Vika the pianist follow showed massive potential as a child in Kiev and was put into the state piano program.

While when they needed something built like the BAM railway they incentivised it i.e. people could have cars right away rather than wait 5 years.

TBH I think it would be more an Joe Halderman situation.

Each person is issued X amount of chits which can buy Y amount of entertainment credits, booze, see films, buy music.
