Think I'm gonna get a new bike when my insurance is up for renewal in February but I want to start thinking about what I want now .Insurance is a big factor but hopefully this year with me being 20 and having 3 years NCB it should drop a fair amount. My FZR is good and I like it but I just fancy a change. After my off ages ago I haven't been able to get any replacement fairings so its covered in scratches on the left hand side and I just want something nice again.

My preferences are either a sportsbike or a naked, just depends what bike takes my fancy. Want about 90/100bhp. So that's mainly 600 territory I suppose. Budget is about a grand, could spend a few hundred quid more if it's something good.

Just want to see if anyone suggests something that I haven't considered.

Cheers. Thumbs Up

Not too clued up on nakeds. Sportsbike wise, late 90's 600 all made around 100bhp, though your budget might be a bit restrictive.
You should get a Ninja or a Thundercat though Thumbs Up

Why 90/100 bhp out of interest?

I got a cracking ZX7r for £1250 but its more 110 bhp.

If your not fussed on BHP, there are quite a few more bikes.

RF900, ZX9 etc etc

90/100BHP because that is what my FZR is and I'm happy with that for now. I'd love a ZX7R but the insurance is a bit much, about £750 quid.

I also really like ZX6Rs but insurance is more like £900. I know Thundercats are good bikes but I just don't fancy one. It's practically the same bike as the one I already have, just a bit newer and slightly less sporty.

Hornets are £270 on insurance so they are looking favourable right now.

The bike I get I might only be keeping for a few months, depends how soon after I finish uni I get a full-time job.

Don't want to burst your bubble or anything but i wouldn't count on it Sad Thumbs Down Mine finally dropped this renewal at 23 Y/O and 6 years NCB. I've been told i've been unlucky but still Mad

ZX6 crucified me on insurance the last 3 years, i did bite the bullet and its a newer model than the ones you'd be looking at probably but i wouldn't hold out too much hope to be honest.

Comparatively my friend of same age/ncb has paid peanuts on CB500/600's, SV's, Falcos during the same period, and around at similar purchase costs to your budget Thinking

Hmm, I seem to be pretty lucky when it comes to insurance, since turning 19 I can now insure a zx6, GSXR, fireblade etc for about £250 a year.

In fact when my insurance is up for renewal on my hornet next month, MCE have quoted my about £150. Very Happy

ZX7R is what you need, enough power but not too much for the open road with fully adjustable suspension and great riding position. It feels like grand prix came to the town when I fire it up. Thumbs Up

EDIT: Or an 750 SRAD, R7 and so on. 750cc is just perfect for any rider. A bit too fast for me, but I just covered 600km on the ZX7R so I don't know the bike well yet.

personally, id go for a oil cooled gsxr 750, or bandit

Stop suggesting ZX7Rs! I really want one but the insurance is too much. Sad Also 750 sports bikes are out of the question, can't insure 600s so I doubt I'll be able to insure the 750 version, I'll do a few quotes now just to make sure though.

As I said before a Hornet is looking like the best option at the moment, only £270 to insure and I was looking at buying one before I bought my FZR 2 years ago.

I looked at RF6/900s a while back but I've changed my mind, they're too much like a tourer for my liking. Got no need for a tourer. Also the 900 is too much of a power increase, I'm sure I could handle it and part of me wants to go out and buy the most powerful thing I can afford but then I don't want to have nothing to look forward to.

Reed, you are very lucky. A lot of it depends on where you live and what you do though. I'm a student living in a postcode rated 'D' I think so it's not the best.

Insurance for my FZR has halved from last year, getting quotes for around £300-£350 when it was £650 last year, but like I said, I can't get hold of replacement fairings and just fancy something different.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Thumbs Up

EDIT: Cheapest quote for a GSXR750 is a grand.

looked at mid-late 90's CBR600? They always seemed reasonable for insurance years ago, same engine as Hornet too.

Yamaha TRX 850?

which hornet you looking at? the 600 or the 900?

iv ridden both, maybe worth checking out the insurance on the 900 - its got a detuned version of the older fireblade engine - the torque is beautiful on it, but can make you lazy in the gear change dept coz its so forgiving, you can be in any gear nearly, open it up and it just goes. the 600 you need to work a bit more - probably more the " riders " bike - i got lazy with my 900 but loved it.

not lot goes wrong with them - never had a minutes trouble with mine.

How much budget stretching can you do?

I'm a similar age and insured my hornet relatively cheap, I can only say good things about it..

Not that much Laughing

I'm looking at a 600 Hornet, don't really want anything bigger than that just yet.

For a 99 CBR600 I get a couple of quotes at £300 ish, one at £750 and the rest over a grand. And the cheap quotes have a stupid excess, for a hornet it's around £250 excess. Not that I intend to crash it and claim off insurance but if it gets nicked I don't want to get shafted.

Time to change the location, I pay here, in CZE 58.69GBP per year, it doesn't cover vandalism and theft.

I went to my insurance company and said, I want the cheapest product you can offer me, try it too and if they won't, then tell them that you can have better conditions with another company. Thumbs Up

How often do you ride at wide open throttle at the peak of the power curve?

If the answer is "not very" then maybe consider torque curves rather than peak power.
