I have worn specks since I was nine years old for short sightedness, I should use glasses for reading as well but I don't as I am ok if the book is close up, last eye test was Dec last year for my ACU licence and I had new specs at the same time.
This morning I noticed I can not focus my right eye for distance, so much so that I thought the lens had popped out of my glasses and I just noticed that I can not focus that eye close up. I guess it is the opticians on Saturday.
I have no idea how long the eye has been rubbish for as the left compensates.

It seems quite sudden but as I said the other eye compensates for it so it could just have been a rubbish eye test and I never clocked that I could not see on one side. My mother is almost blind from glaucoma so it is a slight worry even though it is only one eye and the ACU should licence me with one good eye next year if it is stuffed.

I wouldn't be too worried, past a certain age and once the eyes start going downhill it tends to be an ongoing progressive thing - doesn't mean you're speeding towards losing your sight in most cases though, just you tend to need more regular and more customised glasses than you do in the past.

Good thing is with regular eyetests once you know you need them is they'll slow the deterioration down and also should catch things like glaucoma in the early stages if they ever are a problem.

I am not over stressed yet, I doubt it is serious and even if it is I still have a good eye.

How? How does this work? By prescribing glasses? How does that slow down deteriorating eyesight?

Genuinely want to know. Go ahead and be as technical as you like.

If one of the eyes is deteroirating at a faster rate, you aren't likely to notice it as much due to the other eyes lense being okay still.

If you get into a routine of regular tests once you know one of thems going 'out of sync' for whatever reason, you can get the appropriate lenses sooner and aren't going to be straining the eye for long periods of time, and its going to pick up anything else thats causing that eye to change sooner - such as glaucoma.

Not being an optician or knowing much at all about it, merely being short sighted, I would have thought that wearing glasses slows down the rate of degeneration of your eye because it reduces eye strain.

Whenever my prescription is starting to become a bit useless (thankfully the rate of change has slowed a bit, in my teenage years it was fairly rapid), I find myself squinting to look at things. I doubt it's immediately damaging but it can't be good long term. Like straining your back to pick up objects - not immediately damaging but it builds up.

My eye sight dropped off a cliff when I started wearing glasses three years ago. Lately it seems to have dropped off another cliff, but that may be due to tiredness and wearing my glasses 12 hours a day on a pc screen.

So age-onset focusing problems are a problem with a weak muscle, rather than congenital problems which are to do with the shape of the eye itself. Correct (genuinely not sure on this point)?

The muscle controlling accomodation is striated muscle, just like the muscles that move your arms and legs.

So why would making it easier for that muscle to focus make it stronger? Seems to me it's like putting a support bandage on an injured leg, all you do is make that muscle weaker and dependant on the bandage.

You don't fix a weak muscle by stopping using it as much or by p[utting a bandage on it. You fix it by physiotherapy and exercising it. Why is it different for an eye?

So how do glasses slow down deterioration? Surely they just compensate for it until the weakness progresses further? I'd imagine if anything they'd speed up the problem.

Always seems to me that people can hold off needing glasses for a long time but once they have them, they need progressively stronger and stronger prescriptions.

And there stands the basis of my optometry conspiracy theory. Put people whose income is soley reliant on the selling of glasses in charge of deciding who needs glasses and you'll find you need glasses.

Sorry, I don't agree with that at all.

There are schools of thought that continuously wearing glasses actually worsens the problem as your eyes get used to needing them and stop trying to work properly.

Case in point.. I've been long sighted virtually all my life and have slight cataract in both eyes. I have glasses but only wear them if I'm tired when using the computer. (Or when I was at school, doing exams and that) Other than that I never wear them.

My eyesight is excellent considering the above and hasn't changed in over 20 years.

Even the optician agrees with me when I tell her I don't like wearing my glasses as I don't want my eyes to get used to them.

Another quick example is a friend and former work colleague of mine was in a similar situation and wore his glasses all the time.. he now can't be without them.

Ditto on glasses making your eyes worse. I recently got new glasses (pair for TV and driving/riding, another pair for the PC) and my focus without them has become worse.

I didn't mean optical power (i.e. needing simply stronger glasses over time). It might depend on whether you're near or long sighted as well.

Without my glasses or with lower power glasses I would be squinting 24/7, I can't see a few feet past my face without them. If I wore specs that were three or four years old, I'd have a constant headache from having to stress those muscles - if I didn't wear them at all I'd basically become disabled.

I could well be talking complete nonsense but I can see that causing more major damage than just lacking the ability to focus. For me the latter is just an unavoidable given.

I'd fork out for laser eye surgery if I could be sure it'd be useful for more than a few years.

That is not your eyes getting worse....

Its your eyes getting used to the correction of the lenses.

Do not understand one pair for driving & TV. Given that TV is going to be a lot closer than sight needed for driving.....

Ariel Badger.

I would be making a appointment with the Docs and get a referral to the eye clinic.

I think it's something to do with the PD (pupillary distance) - optimising the focal point in the lenses - when you're looking at a close PC screen your eyes are using a different part of the lens compared to when looking at something in the distance.

My eyes are improving as I age. I've dropped 1.0 on my prescription over the last couple of years.

That seems counterintuitive but there you go.

Eyes are weird things.

PD is the measurement from the front of the eye to the lens in the glasses. (30 years making the bloody things)

Can understand the PC side as you are looking at 2-3 feet for a monitor.
Average TV distance is 12 foot...... God help anyone that drives only looking that far.....

I went to Specsavers (not my normal branch) and they were brilliant. They said they could see me straight away Over the next hour and a quarter I was examined three times with everyone agreeing my eye was rubbish, they had my details from the branch I normally attend faxed over (it seems Specsavers are franchises and not a single entity with central records)and this confirmed my eye was ok last January (with specs).
To end a long story I have a cataract on the eye and am expecting to be called into hospital in the next few days.
Specsavers, I am so impressed. Thank you.

Its not a bad op. Most likely under local anaesthetic.

In and out in a couple of hours.

Bright side is free eye tests now Laughing

I think you are largely correct.

To give you an idea, I had a squint diagnosed aged 2 years old. I was instantly put on a prescription of "eye patches" which I absolutely detested, but ultimately they work by making your "weak" eye do the lion share of the work and I would guess strengthen the associated eye muscle.

I didn't have any other treatment, just patches and glasses. When I was 15 I was told my eyesight was sufficiently good enough that I no longer needed glasses. However I am to expect to suffer after my mid to late thirties.

I am not sure what I had was applicable to old age as I would guess there are different muscular issues within the eye?
