I'm a fan of modern bikes - but I know that a few members at least have some 'old' bikes. Obviously Ariel's Badger is a few yrs older than me.

I was wondering, who here has an old bike - say earlier than 1960 - and who has the oldest?

Oldest in my garage is a 1978 Yam SR500.

My ZX7R is the first bike I've owned that is younger than me...

Actually DJS I think I have to correct myself - I think they were actually James motorcycles from the 1920's not Scotts. 2-stroke, watercooled, telescopic forks IIRC. I met the guy because he bought an old Drummond Lathe left by my late father.

One of the curators at work commutes on a bunch of oldies, the oldest being a real oldie, 1920's-30's kind of age which comes out once or twice a year at most. The regulars are a Ducati mark 4 and a BMW (r50 I think), kick start push rod engined BMW.

Like so:

Also this is the BMW which is more or less his day to day bike, though he does switch about quite regularly.

My Dad has a mixture of old bikes. I think oldest is his Vincent Series B Rapide 1947, if that counts??

Kicking it over is a technique and a half. So he also has a electric starter installed (generally kicks it over though) To start it, it's a spitfire gun button mounted on the crash bar Cool

When there's talk of Old bikes (tech) the main thing would be starting the bastirts and then living with their idiosyncrasies (ignoring getting feckin' parts for them).

Then when there's talk of New bikes (tech) the main thing is 'we don't need rider aids or traction control etc.'

Bikers..... Cnuts are never happy. Rolling Eyes

Pre 1960? My Mobylette just squeaks in at 1959. It's now 100% roadworthy, and I managed to keep most of the patina.

Also a mate managed to obtain a packet of genuine Belgian 1970s Gauloises fags to put in the tool box under the seat.

Is it 100% roadworthy due to the fact that it doesn't need an mot anymore? Laughing

'Roadworthy' and 'MoT' do not live in the same house. Smile

I registered one bike yesterday. (Fiery Feckin' hoops or wot)
The application to register a vehicle asks for several things that were not even invented yet when the machine was built.
i.e. there was no such thing as carbon monoxide (CO mg/kWH) or 'Type Approval' in the 50s.
So long as it wasn't Japanese or Nazi (Or Vichy French) then it was OK.

A mate of my dads turned up the other day on a mobylette from the 1940s/1950s, Despite my pushbike probably being faster it was a cool little thing.

Sadly, as it had fallen off of the DVLA's system, it needs an MoT test before it's issued a new registration number and V5. The plan is to have it tested every year anyway as I can see myself having some hassle from the popo when riding it, because of how it looks.

It doesn't need an MoT if it was built before 1960

7. Vehicles exempt from MOT
Some vehicles don’t have to take an MOT test. These include:

tractors
goods vehicles powered by electricity
any vehicle less than 3 years old
cars and motorbikes made before 1960

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/222585/dg_065277.pdf

Warning:
Police Police Police Teferesque post. Police Police Police

I just registered a 1956 bike so I know. Smile

It was almost painless, the only hassle is collating the conflicting information that is everywhere from the BSA Owners' Club (Relaxed Gentlemen) and DVLA's on line guff.

The application form, which is an NCC (non carbon copy) document so cannot be downloaded, has 50 odd questions that only about 20 apply to auld bikes.

The important thing is insurance. You cannot get tax without insurance. and you can't 'easily' get insurance without a Reg. No. so it is a 'classic' (pardon the pun) Catch 22.
Most insurers need a registration No. or they won't cover the vehicle. Some will cover for 14 days then demand a Reg. No. or cancel the policy.

DVLA say the process of registration can take up to 6 weeks. So you need to find an insurer that will accept the frame No. and you only need advise them of the Reg. No. when received

I got help from a lovely Welsh lassie at DVLA. Shocked
She gave me the Tel. No. for BIBA (British Insurance Brokers Association) Not the cute pop star we all love.

FYI: BIBA 08709501790

They asked details of the bike and connect you to a broker to arrange cover. I got both bikes on Fully Comp for £100 where the comparison site quoted £110 (or £75 for each)

The local DVLA office helped me with the application form and accepted all the evidence and then sent it all off to DVLA Swansea for processing. Even though local DVLA offices no longer take anything to do with this and you are required to post to DVLA.

You need proof of ID. Drivers licence/passport/birth cert (photocopies are accepted by DVLA)
Proof of Address. recent utility bills
Proof of vehicle ID (you can get a cert. from a recognised owners' club)
Photographs of both sides of vehicle and the vehicle's I.D. detail i.e. Frame and Engine Serial Nos.
and £55.

Historic vehicles must display a 'Road Tax disc' but the tax is free so shows Nil in the space that shows the amount paid.

The whole exercise could be disguised or dressed up as a part of the restoration process, if you look at it a certain way.
