Hello there. I am thinking of buying some mid-range bike which has came off-road and turn it into a nice custom all terrain scrambler which resembles the 1960s/1970s dirt bikes of the times.

Been following this site for a while.
https://blitz-motorcycles.com/

Now I don't have their kind of money for a start. I know a BMWR100/7 can cost £4000. I was thinking something less costly like a HONDA CB400 or a YAMAHA SR500.

So was wondering if you guys have any experience in turning bog standard bikes into something that looks and feels great.

Any suggestions what kind of Bike/Write off would be a good project?

First off, you won't make a great dirt bike.

You can make any bike an ok dirt bike by sticking some dirt tyres on it - and ideally wider bars.
(Ok cruisers may not be idea, but they're not ideal for much anyway.)

So, we're down to looks.
And that's going to be whatever [b]you[b] will like the look of.
Me, I'd say a GSXR1000 if I wanted a practical road based dirt bike.
If I wanted pretty, I'd probably doing something with a basic perimeter frame road bike and a big air cooled single.

I paid a bit over £500 for a R100RT a few years ago - it did sell for 50% more than that however.

Do you think a Chinese YBR125 replica could be turned into something which could resemble a vintage scrambler?
If so I could probably get one which has been written off for less than £100.

I know I'll never be able to get a great dirt bike out of a mid-range bike but at least it will give me the time I need to become a good rider. Then perhaps I could move onto something better like a BMW. The R100RT is a nice bike. Then again most BMW in those days are nice too. My only concern about 40 year old bike is getting the parts for it. The odd bit of fabrication and shop work is fine but when it comes down to the engine and things like that I would struggle. Lets say mechanical engineering isn't my day job.

So ye change tyres, handlebars and also adjust the seating position. That is the 1st main mods I would do.

What about look at some anti-rust treatment for the engine and exhaust. If its going in some mud/water then some TLC always helps.

What do you think to custom fabrication of a exhaust that goes across the frame instead of underneath it?
A friend was on about have the most room underneath the bike to have a bit more ground clearance.

Thanks for reply anyway G. Nice forum you have here.
