Just realised I need a provisional license before I do my CBT..

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

How hard is this to get?! I've already read the requirements, is it that easy do I just apply and it comes in the post? Seems too good to be true.

I think it takes up to two weeks to arrive, i recently had to replace my lost provisional and it took a week to get to me and that was just replacing an existing provisional... it'll prob's take longer for your first provisional.

Well a CBT to me would seem sufficient? I don't even know how the provisional proves I know ANYTHING about the road.

It DOESN'T... its a 'provisional' a LEARNERS PERMIT... provided on the 'provision' you intend to take tests and get a FULL licence, in order that you may 'practice' ahead of taking those tests.

Fact that you can ride, unsupervised for up to two years on the validation of a CBT does not mean you are in any way QUALIFIED to do so....

Its a loop-hole of legacy legislation from before radio supervision of learner-riders was possible; when it was the only way a new rider could learn to ride; unlike a car driver who can have an instructor or qualified driver in the passenger seat to super-vise and yank on the hand-brake should they be a bit of a tit!

And legally, its a loop-hole that has only been retained in Britain; rest of Europe; you want to ride a motorbike; just like driving a car, you have to pass your test FIRST before you are allowed out on your own on the public roads.

Just a thought for you... Learner-Riders are approximately five to ten times more likely to crash a motorcycle than a qualified rider.

Another thought for you... A qualified motorcyclist is five times more likey to crash than a qualified car driver.

Hmmm... SO you are 25 times more likely to hurt yourself than a new car driver..... YET you are the one let loose, on the roads, on your own, without ANY kind of qualification of competance.... dont make good sense, does it?

Hint: Get your provisional; go do your CBT, but DONT think thats the be alland end all. Work towards becoming a competant rider, and getting a full licence. And to that end, TRAINING beyond CBT is good.

I used to reckon that every hour of training in the first month of being on the roads was worth a day, if you left it a year.

Learn to do the right stuff, right from the start.

Dont let bad habbits set in; dont learn by the school of hard-knocks.. or making mistakes, because on a motorbike you might not get a second chance to make another one!

You dont say how old you are, or what you are intending to do; but if you have never ridden or driven anything before and have no licence of any sort; I'm presuming 16/17 or at least young.

New system is heavily weighted against younger riders; at 16 you can only have a moped, at 17-19 a 125, and at 19 you might only test for a 45bhp middle-weight machine, and either do it over after two years to get an unrestricted ride what you like licence, or wait until you are 24 and do it via DAS...

BUT... Right-Stuff, Right from the start.

If you work towards tests, even if they dont have any great benefit to them; its the ATTITUDE and discipline you'll aquire along the way that will make you a better, safer rider, NOT the bit of paper.

Though bits of paper do have a couple of merits; main one if you pass the moped or A1 125 only tests, you get a full licence, whichstarts the 2 year count-down on the New Drivers Probation, where points can get your licence 'revoked'... sooner thats in the bag, sooner the probations over, and best over whilst you are restricted to lower performance machines less likely to earn you the sort of points that dont mean prizes!

Next? Secures your 'Theory' test. That doesn't have to be repeated, at least for two-wheeled licence groups, if you subsequently 'upgrade' to higher licence catagories.

And, if/when, you go to upgrade to higher licences, you are a proven qualified rider, to either riding school or Driving Examiner; all they need to do is get you up to scratch and familiar on, or competant managing a bigger bike; so you ought to have more confidence of first time pass at higher licence groups and need less expensive training to get them.

Meanwhile; back to that training? As said, doing stuff right, right from the start.... can seem expensive, BUT... you dont see the value in the savings you make NOT crashing, using the know how lessons give you every time you go out on two wheels.

Crash hat? £150 that saves your head once? Lasts five years, that you can see and touch, and has tangible intrinsic 'solid' worth, you can see.... But training? Works all the time. Never wears out, and saves your head on EVERY ride you DONT crash. Its difficult to put a price on, but IS worth it in the long run.

Give it a thought as you plan your way into biking. Training & tests. Every other road user has to do them, and they are nowhere near as at risk of having an accident as you are on a motorbike.

Might not be legal requirement; but that dont mean its not a good idea.
