Hi all

Trying to remove clutch to get at cc seals etc... on the suzuki a100.

Attempted the Haynes method with alarge jubilee clip around the inner part strapped to a bent rod but no dice - slips.

I don't have any spare plates to make my own locking tool and I don't know of any that are compatible.

Suggestions on where to buy or other methods to lock are welcome.

Cheers

JS

I've used rags before to lock the gears up so that clutch baskets can be removed. Smile

I built something when messing around with my XJ's clutch.

Started off with a metal bar, bought from B&Q earlier that day.

Bend the edges. Add two holes and bolt them together:

Then use to hold the basket whilst trying to do/undo the nut.

Total cost about £5-10.

A 12 volt impact wrench should whip the nut off if the bike is in gear. They can undo things without turning something else.I've used them on clutches and water pumps before. You can get corded ones for about £20 and they're a great tool to have in the garage anyway, for front sprockets, etc.

As a last resort you could wrap a long punch/ metal rod with a rag and put it down the spark plug hole I've never tried this as I have a 24v impact wrench to solve this problem.

Some great idea's on how to completely wreck a clutch/gearbox in here. But this is the best one by far. Why not punch a hole in your piston.
Next suggestion should be:
'Drain all the oil and ride until it seizes up completely'

Yeah I would never recommend it unless it was a road side bodge.

You can get impact wrenches from eBay for around 60 quid for battery ones just get one they are invaluable tools save loads of time aswell. But you will end up using it for just about everything.

You'll get a corded one for about £24 just hook it up to your bike battery or a friend/relatives car battery.I'd rather have a corded one anyway as you don't end up with a tool with a f&%ked battery in a couple of years time.I've been using a Woolworths one I bought at an auotojumble about four years ago for £7 until Friday when it impacted itself,so I've just ordered one with a digital torque display for £35. Smile

I have owned one of the 12v ones and didn't think they were very powerful ie not enough for wheel nuts etc

This has done me well for a while, its pretty large and the 450nm torque rating is a bit optimistic, buts it's very good for the price

It did produce a lot of smoke when I tried to do a formula 1 speed wheel change on the car though. Laughing

Other than consulting a metallurgist, is there any way of knowing which ones are pre 1992 and which ones are post 1992?

On some small engine bikes the manufacturer actually suggests the use of a Piston Stop. You simply screw a metal bar into the spark plug hole and rotate the engine until the Piston hits it. Then you can take off the clutch/flywheel/whatever.

Now I'm not a huge fan of this method, I can see that it might cause damage to either the piston top or the spark plug threads (it might also be a lot of pressure to put on the head bolts) but saying that you'll punch a hole in the piston is likely in most cases to be incorrect.

IMO, just use an impact wrench. It'll save you a whole lot of time and hassle.

I use it to remove the wheel nut on my Sprint ST and that's torqued to 145NM.

Ah yes sorry me again.. To undo the nut on the inner basket I need
lock the gearbox. Are you suggesting putting the bike into gear
and jamming the front sprocket ?
