Well folks, after riding around on Manx roads for the past 18 months or so, I'm taking myself and the bike over to the UK for a few days next week for the first time and although I'm probably worrying about nothing, I just thought that some of the good folks who post here might be able to give me a few tips, as I have never ridden or drove on UK roads before.

Basically, I'm getting the ferry to Heysham and riding down to my hometown of Liverpool. I'll be doing it on a 125 and not using motorways as I'm still on my provisional licence Embarassed (test is booked for the end of next month). Praying

I am planning on travelling down via the A6 and A59. Now considering that I'm not used to "big" and busy roads does this seem a sensible idea or would I be better off taking some B roads? Also, for anyone who's familiar with this route, is there anything in particular I should be aware of?

All advice will be gratefully taken on board.

Thanks, Dave. Smile

Wave when you go past my house Smile

The trip you explain is all pretty simple and suitable for a 125. Lancaster is a traffic nightmare of standing traffic, white vans unloading where they feel like, etc (I filter through whenever possible) but once you're through the one way system, you're clear until you hit Preston. Depending on the time of day, the centre can get very busy but usually flows. The A59 is a joy on a larger bike so just have your wits about you ready to be overtaken.

Most important, enjoy the ride Smile

Shocked I've only been involved in two crashes, both were the fault of a white van. I still get a nervous twitch when I see one Laughing

Brought up in Fairfield (down the road from Kensington) and lived a few years in Toxteth/Granby. (I could run fast in those days, thankfully Laughing )

Thanks for all the advice guys. The boat's due in just after 12 noon, so hopefully the traffic won't be too bad.

Looking forward to it tbh but, just a little apprehensive having not experienced riding on such big and busy roads, junctions and multi-laned roundabouts. Neutral

May only be 10 mins from the ferry terminal but you're welcome to drop in for a brew if you feel the need and I'm available. Could even nurse you through Lancaster if times allow. What day are you sailing?

Cheers bud. Sailing over on Thursday 31st, all being well weather wise (ie:the boat not being cancelled/delayed. The forecast looks a bit grim for the start of the week but, hopefully it'll have settled down by the time I'm over.
