Full versus flip is a big choice.

I've gone flip and I likely won't go back. But full face is probably safer (check the SHARP ratings for flip security in impacts), can be quieter, and you have the option to fit a chin curtain which I also like.

If you do want flip, I'm perfectly happy with my Nitro F341-VN. It matches your criteria and is feature equivalent with the more expensive Cabergs, although with lower side impacts ratings in SHARP tests.

All i can say regarding flip front is that I had a fairly light crash in my Caberg Sintesi, and the chin bar flew off and was no where to be found.

So I definately won't be having one again. Unless I go for the >£400 Shoeis.

many flip front lids are only approved to open face lid standards

the only one I know of with dual approval, as an open face and full face is the shark evoline @ £300

"Know" of?

Every time that I read this marketing spiel, I ask the same questions:

Which other brands are we talking about?
Who has verified this marketing claim, and where would I go about seeing that evidence?

Is today the day I get to read an answer? Praying

I like the HJC cs-r1. Not pinlock ready but has anti mist visor fitted that works OK. Very comfortable.

I tend to find these anti fog lenses work ok in less extreme temperatures but on any morning thats really cold they wont help at all. Pinlock all the way im afraid.

If you want it to protect, you need to try some above.

If you've tried them on, you can make your own mind up!

I tend to agree. You cant chose by price alone. you need to look at the ratings and also, as importantly, feel how it fits.

No matter how much you pay, if it doesnt fit right, it wont protect you.

Can anyone suggest an open face helmet for me? I want one that is "thinner" so it matches the proportions of my head. Or do they all have the exact same thickness of padding? Oversized helmets are not a good look. https://the-cafe-racer.com/scooter-and-motorcycle-helmets/open-face-helmets?page=all

Of the expensive ones, the Bell RT is the only one that I thought looked right, comfortable too.

At the other end of the scale, Hein Gericke do the Takai Classic for 60 quid, which has the right proportions but is spoiled by the seatbelt style buckle.

Thanks, I'm aware of their marketing, and of the difference between J, P and NP. I'm also aware of the claims that "some" helmets are only tested as J ("open face") which seems peculiar as if you want to get picky, wouldn't that mean they should only be used in that configuration?

What I'm wondering is how I'd go about verifying that any given helmet has actually passed 22.05P (or J or NP) in any European state.

Rogerborg wrote:

Maybe next time. Sad

This is nothing personal, I have much the same issue with verifying that any particular helmet with an E / ECE 22-05 sticker on it has actually achieved that standard in any meaningful way.

The visor on my old Marushin, for example, came with a literal stick-on "E13" which apparently means that it was approved by Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a "state" that has approximately the same population as Leicester. Seems legit, right?

And looking at my Nitro, I notice that:

#1 It doesn't appear to have the mandatory circled E country mark.
#2 It says ECER22-05, but doesn't have the mandatory suffix of J, P or NP, nor the mandatory production serial number.

My helmet is in fact not compliant with ECE Regulation 22 and the retailer has no business selling it anywhere in the EU. How does yours stack up?

Bear in mind that the majority of helmets are going to be made in China, a country where they cheerfully and repeatedly starve and poison babies for profit.

This is why I prefer SHARP over ECE. I can go to the source, and see what State funded boffins with no ties to the industry think of helmets that they have bought retail.

under the old BSI standards each manufacturer used to have a room filled with the testing equipment for each test and country that demanded standards, the BSI man would and did turn up unannounced, remove a number of helmets from the production line and take them to the testing room where a member of trained staff would have to test those helmets and explain what he was doing to the BSI man.

ECE2205, manufacturers are self certifying and no outside body checks that they are to standard, no wonder so many helmets now come in from china

that's why I wear nothing except shoei.
