I have my CBT course booked and I have been looking at Bikes over the past few days, most of the bikes i have seen are not really designed for taller guys. I am 6'8" so I wouldn't really fit right on a smaller bike. Could anyone offer me any advice on what bikes to go for please?

Assuming you mean 125-wise:

Varadero.

It'll still be a bit small, but it's the biggest. Ignore all the people saying they're too expensive: you'll make the difference up when you sell it on and the quality is noticably better than most of the rest. Also, you can't put a price on actually fitting on a bike as comfort runs right through riding - if you're not happy, your riding won't be good.

If you're not limited to 125 then a big adventure type bike or a big naked like gsx 1400. I feel your pain I'm 6ft 5 and it sucks at times.

Im 6,2 did my CBT on a CG, was so cramped I couldn't actually do the figure of eight as the handlebars would hit my knees. After my CBT I got a Yamaha WR125X. its a good size if youre tall, same height as a Varadero but more power and lighter, still substantial in size and I was always getting asked if it was a 250.

I'm 195cm (6.4) and look at my bikes, just sit more back from the tank and you'll be alright. There are not many bikes that wouldn't be rideable at your height. Thumbs Up

A mate of mine is 6"3 with a WR125r, I'm 6"5 and it's perfect for our height. Its a pricey 125, but you'll be getting your moneys worth. Its practically a 250, mate claims he's had 90+ out of it and its full of low end power. Its got a r125 engine with a better gearing and much better frame.

I genuinely can't work out why the tiny japs made such a tall bike.

Well that is a load of bollocks Laughing

It'll do 70, it has no wind protection so the air resistance is going to be fucking astronomical.
The R125 has an indicated 83mph top speed, so probably on a good day a genuine 75.
The Varadero indicated 80 all day long with a GPS speed of 80, 2 up.

The Varadero is the way you want to go for the best 4 stroke for a larger person. If it can cope with my 13 stone and my friend... 11 (maybe) stone then it will cope with most things Laughing

Looking at https://cycle-ergo.com/ the WR125R does indeed look like a good candidate, even compared to a Varadero. But nobody's mate has ever had one within 4/1000" of 90mph.

I'm not saying it will do 90 every ride, but it HAS done 90mph.
Why is it every time I claim a top speed there's a thousand people waiting to go "oh no, that bike I've never ridden won't do that" "GPS speeds are 0.06% more accurate so you're wrong" and so on. I'm really starting to think 90% of riders are scared of anything over 6k rpm.

It can't do 90 Laughing You would need more horse power than the engine can generate.

Even the truck that got the bike into the country never hit 90 miles per hour, no way Thumbs Up Smile

EDIT: Andy, take whatever catches your eye, I did and was happy. I know the GPz is a big bike, but the NC27 was quite small, smaller than GS500 I'd say, but still perfectly rideable at any pace. If I were in your possition, I'd go for an used, cheap CBR125R. Thumbs Up

Fastest I had out of my WR125X was 76 indicated. That was down hill with a strong wind behind me.

Id imagine starting bikes is the same no matter how tall you are? Just push the switch!

It's doubtless that we're all wrong and you're special.

WR125R would be a decent choice. Wink

I'm glad you posted that makes me feel that I look slightly less of a gorilla on a monkey bike at 6'2 on my RXS Laughing

But my vote would be for a Varadero if one can be found for the right price I'd be surprised (tend to go for prices of over a grand unless high miles or tatty), mine was a great bike, good mpg, reasonable performance and comfortable riding position Thumbs Up

What bike do you ride now? I'm always interested to know which bikes are the most comfy for us long uns.

Always pisses me off that I can't go out and buy a cheap blade or something but the blackbird is a great compromise Cool

TDM, perfect for my size.

https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/227560_10150193413863476_6033145_n.jpg

I'd always ride this style of bike as a 'main' bike in future, I like the TDM as it is the lightest and most nimble for it's size. Mine has had a lot of work done to get it to how I want it. Most importantly for the ride...

Lots spent getting the forks built for my weight and a wilbers shock built to my spec.
Raised the rear for a bit of extra height and a sharper turn in.
PC3 and airbox mod, smooth pull from 1700rpm.
Custom seat to add another inch or so to the height and stop numb bum on long rides.

There has been a shite load of other stuff done to it, but that is the main comfort/ride stuff.

66,000 miles and counting. Cool
