There's a bike local to me that's been dumped for almost two years. I'm tempted to file for the V5 ( i think it costs though)

If I did file for it, and got the documents, I take it I can legally remove the bike from where its sat without issue?

worth doing peeps? Otherwise it'll just go to waste.

No, it's not yours. Maybe the owner is in prison, maybe he's in Afghanistan, maybe he's backpacking around Australia?

There is no legal way to do this. You can apply for the V5 but it doesn't make the bike yours. If the owner comes back you can be done for TWOCing. The only legal way to do it is to contact the owner and ask if you can buy it.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

If the bike is on public land and has been for x amount of time you can apply for the v5, but that wouldn't make you the legal owner, even v5 says not proof of ownership.

Run a HPI check on it to see if it's already nicked?

A stolen one.

It might not be stolen yet, but it sounds as though it is about to be.

I'll steer clear then.

If it were me, I'd probably run an HPI check, see what that says, then go from there. Worst case scenario, it comes back as stolen, and you have helped get it back to its original owner. Thumbs Up

Is it taxed? If its on public land without valid tax, I'm surprised plod hasn't removed it. If it is taxed, then the owner clearly still wants it.

Or declared SORN, in which case it's still known about/wanted.

Doesnt this apply?

"You may also claim the goods for yourself if you have taken the relevant steps to locate the owner, such as leaving them at a police station to be claimed. You must wait six weeks before the police will allow you to claim lost goods as your own."

Remove the temptation. Moan to the local council about it being abandoned and they'll come and sweep it up and try and bill the owner/keeper.
