Hey,

I have a Ninja ZX6R and over the last couple of days the above problem has been getting worse.

The bike starts fine and rides fine then the throttle will die as if I've run out of fuel (I haven't...) and the only way to get any power is to turn the ignition off and on again whilst riding. The bike will then backfire and jump as if I've bump started it and my throttle will then be ok again.

It happens multiple times on a single half hour journey, for example, and I think it may be triggered when I hit bumpy road surfaces.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Maria

Does the bike have a fuel pump?

Yes it does. Possibly dodgy wiring there?

Have seen a thread a while back with roughly the same issues, fuel pump was the issue. Worth removing and testing Thumbs Up

Fuel pumps are a known issue on carb models, I know this , I have one, I fitted a new pump to get over a starvation issue, you need to specify what year your bike is, they are fuel injected on later models.

If the bike is backfiring when you turn the ignition off then on, it may mean that the fuel is still getting through after the engine cuts out. Might be worth opening the kill switch up and checking for any corrosion or shorting out.

This. The back firing suggests a lack of spark rather than a lack of fuel.

Had check your kill switch/earths, then start looking at coils and that sort of thing.

your fuel pumps on way out just either buy a new one or take a chance with a used one.

Had a similar thing on a cbr 600 recently. Turned out to be a loose electrical connection. Might be worth checking them as its a no cost option.
Hope that's of some use

After a quick inspection it was soon apparent that the connectors on the battery were ridiculously loose as was the bracket holding the battery still!

After tightening it all I went for a ride round the most bumpy roads I could fine and it's all good...

What a tit!

Thanks for your input everyone!
