PostPosted: 12:02 - 30 Oct 2013    Post subject: Make an allegation or not? Reply with quote

As the forum knows I fitted a camera to my bike in case of an incident and I had a little one last night.

On the way home I was driving down Euston road and I had a bus pull out on me. The bus driver was at the bus stop outside Kings cross and pulled forward and as is often the case he indicated as he changed lane instead of indicating before he changed lane, there was a car directly behind me so I couldn't slow down and a Taxi to my right so I couldn't move over into the next lane.. I sounded my horn which is extremely loud on the Deauville and the bus driver ignored it luckily the Black Taxi driver realised what was happening, slowed down and gave me an escape route to the right.

When I approached the bus drivers window his attitude was 'well I indicated so its your fault'.

In the past buses have been fitted with cameras so they can be used to prosecute bad driving, in fact years back an MP tried to pass a motion that all Black Taxis which are privately owned vehicles should be fitted with police controlled cameras to prosecute bad driving so what do the BCF massive think, should I make an allegation of driving without due care which will probably go nowhere but will cause a fair amount of hassle for a bus driver with a bad attitude?

Video is here. As usual it is private as I don't want to become a whinging Vlogger.

I do that all the time on my drift.

I just send them a video (email or disk) but I never really hear back sometimes

I'd say its worth doing, next time the biker may not be so lucky as to be beside a switched on cab driver.

It's a slim chance but my partners step-mum runs the Catford Stagecoach bus depot so if it's one of her buses I may be able to get you a direct email address for her?

Bad driving.

He didn't even try any hazard avoidance ... just I'm turning, fuck you.

You should send the file and an email asking for an enquiry just to make his life a bit harder for a bit. He deserves it.

I get that sort of crap daily - these days I CBA to do anything about it - although it wouldn't hurt to fire off the vid to the bus company.
They'll do absolutely nothing btw, best case you might get a PR-template reply saying they'll review the driver's training.

You say you couldn't have slowed down due to a car but...I would have slowed down? From the video it's predictable what he is going to do, annoying yes, but making a claim / allegation, no.

There is bad driving everyday, we all do it but I like to think most people including myself will acknowledge we aren't perfect and raise a hand to say sorry. It was his attitude of I indicated and you should get out of my way regardless of the fact that I couldn't due to other vehicles daring to use 'his' road.

As a further piece of information most buses turn left at that junction so his pulling to the right was a surprise.

Having the joy of riding and driving in London up until recently yes, might is right for them and certainly no waiting from time of indications to pulling out.

Maybe he was running late...

if you contact the bus company (you did get the registration or bus number didn't you?) you'll be fobbed off with they don't know which driver it was (utter pish as they know exactly who is on the buses at all times), or he'll get a damn good bollocking, sent for retraining or lose his job

I'm in with the other suggestions to send it off.
...but where? TfL, the actual bus company, the police, all 3, somewhere else?

After all sending it off you will (in theory) be no worse off. In fact doing a public duty/service.
If the bus driver thinks that how he drives is acceptable then there's an accident just waiting to happen right there. If his employers think that his driving is acceptable then there's a much wider debate there also.

Best of luck Thumbs Up

I agree with you, if I ever cut it fine and see a car turning out of my way or something I'll hold my hand up so they can see and carry on. When I first tried filtering I actually knocked a mirror so I put my hand up and actually pulled to the left and stopped. The guy drove past mouthing it's alright with his thumb up.

Little things

I know your route well and the Euston Road is the worst for errant drivers, cyclists and in some instances motorcyclists.

His driving was bad - he didn't see you.

I'd report it to the Head Office of the company (Metroline). Phone them (020 8218 8888) and get the name, title and email address of the person responsible for bus operations. If the receptionist refuses - ask for her name and tell her that you will report the dangerous driving & violent behaviour of the driver (exaggerate) to the police and national press - so the Director will know about it when they come knocking on his door and you (lady receptionist failed to tell him about it).

There are sites run by the Met https://www.met.police.uk/roadsafelondon/ where you can report the driver. Hopefully you will get the info of the person responsible at Metroline and hopefully they'll do something about it!

I was nearly killed by a minicab last summer (not Addison Lee!) and his attitude was "so what, f*ck you". I phoned his firm giving them all the details they tracked the driver via GPS and they then got him to come to my office and apologise in person.

So avoid one incident to potentially cause another?

Why is it predictable? The bus is in a lane to turn left as many buses at that point do and at the last moment does a lane change forces his way.

I haven't mentioned claim, there is nothing on which to make a claim.

So you consider bad driving AND a bad attitude concerning it acceptable?

Initially saw the first bus, saw an indicator and was like "sickpup, you just a bad rider bro" then the 2nd one.. yeah, fuck that. Laughing

I'd too be a bit pissed at that... I'd be pulling out the keyboard when I got home Laughing

Normally I'd say, shit happens, you're okay, don't worry about it. But next time that could be someone under the wheels or pinned between a truck and the bus.

Yeah a bit too close for comfort, I hate that section of road.

I'd say send it off.

Personally I would have probably tried to accelerate out of it.

I can't really say I would side with the bus driver, but doesn't the highway code make specific allowances for buses? They don't have 'right of way' per se, but you are supposed to give them priority to pull out.

They still have to wait until it's safe to do so.

As far as I could make out, I wouldn't have really anticipated that bus coming out. I'll give way when I see a clear indicator and am not already side on with the multi ton metal beast.

They still have to drive with due care and attention. As do the emergency services. You can't have people driving ignorantly and dangerous and say "it's ok, the highway code says i have priority".

EDIT:

Also he has gone into one of those advanced stop areas for cyclists. Bad driver!

I'd be down to see his boss immediately. I'd show the video and demand action or I'd take it to the police. At least you will have vented your spleen and caused grief for the asshole.

Give priority to these vehicles when you can do so safely, especially when they signal to pull away from stops. Look out for people getting off a bus or tram and crossing the road.

To OP. Having revisited this you've obviously been home, slept on it and it still troubles you. So do something meaningful about it rather than just moan.
