My son wants to take after his father and continue with bikes... he rides a scooter at the moment but in march he wants a 125... I suggested he gets a fairly cheap bike so he gets used to it, passes his test and gets a nicer bike, is that good adivce?

What bike should he get ? he's not had no experience with gears before apart from like quads but he learns fast...

thx for the replies Cool

Yeah, good advice there, get a cheap 125, like a CG125. And learn on that , the pass test and get a bigger bike.

There is no point in my opinion of buying a really expensive Sports 125 and blowing all your money on that, you can get a cheap CG for about £300-400 with 12 months MOT so theres no point on buying a £2000 NSR only too look good.

As for experience with gears, long as he gets the idea of how they work (i.e seen you on bikes, or even in cars) then he will have a few shaky runs with some dodgy changing... then fall into a habit and pickup his own style quick enough. Just gotta get him out there changing gear!

Some people do extra training courses for geared bikes etc... only really needed if you really are struggling since their expensive way to simply get experience on something you need practice on.

I don't know what insurance is like on a ped, but my insurance on a 2t 125 was a shade over £200.

I'm £235 on a CG125 at 18, no previous experience on a bike, only just got CBT. I'd imagine you should be able to get below £300, although I had some really big quotes, so it might be worth changing his insurance company if they just give him a stupid figure.

You don't have to spend two grand on a sports 125 you know. He's probably not going to have it too long so get a good few years old sports 125 for perhaps twice as much as the CG you're talking about and have twice as much fun Thumbs Up

Honda H100. Small, light, geared, reliable, cheap to insure (100cc), does the same speed as a CG. Excellent fun to ride, very forgiving. Not much to damage if (when) you crash it, easy to work on and parts are cheap as chips.

You will get a good un for 3-400 quid.

I have one despite having three 500cc + bikes because they are such good fun.

At this time of year, it is worth considering a trailie too, they are a lot more forgiving in the handling department and are designed to be dropped with minimal damage.

Of course, that is me being a boring old fart and saying the sensible option, what he will want is a nice derestricted NSR125 to pose in the local car park on and drop/blow up.

How much speed do you get out of it, derestricted?

If the ts 125 is any thing as reliable as the 50 it will start first kick every time, mine is first or second kick, never more, mostly 1 kick.

100cc means he will need to get a new bike to do his test! As all bikes used for the A2 test must be over 120cc!

60 reliably, I have seen 70 on the clock but if you kept this up it would seize in short order.

Hi,

Like a few peops are saying, its best to get a CG125. Talking from a little experience, the CG's are great bikes. OK so they aren't that great looking but they are very cheap to run and insure, hardly anything goes wrong on them, and even if it does its cheap to fix, saying that you can fix most problems yourself as its a simple bike. Also its a perfect runner and starts easily. Mine hasn't been treated the best in its long life and it is really old but still starts first time ever ytime without any hassel! I recommend one any day!

Then after he has passed his test he can move up onto a bigger bike.

I'd recommend a kymco zing Very Happy Speaking from experience of course. Basically, its the same little engine from the honda cg but in a nicer looking package.

Yeah, its a cruiser, but hey, as most say he'll probably only have it for 6 months or so and it'll open up his eyes to accepting other kinds of bikes. Plenty of people knock cruisers and they haven't even tried them!!! Very relaxing riding position(wear a bag and you can literally lie down)

Decent enough build quality, reliable and cheap.

Eitehr way, 4 stroke 125, you can't go wrong, unless its either new or called hongdou Wink

I had a KH100 for almost a year. Good bike, it would do 70mph on the flat, although the vibration numbs your hands after a minute at that rpm. I used the training schools 125's for my test. Quite ironic really as they felt shit slow in comparison, the 2-stroke was noticeably pokier especially after my Dad fiddled with the carb.

You could just skip the 125 and let him do his test straight away, thats what I did. My first bike was the ZXR, I'd never been on a bike until 5 days before my test. If he's got a years road experience on a scooter he should do fine.

dnt bother gettin a new-un.

i'd say just have a few days pre test trainin, get the test done then the world is his clam*

its pointless spendin £400 on a bike then £2-300 on insurance if he's only keepin it a little while,

just do the test then buy a 33bhp bike. more fun. not too powerful for a first bike.

i felt comfortable on my mates mito (derestricted) the power wasn't hard to manage or anything.

They were not restricted. Top speed was a claimed 58mph, but they have very low gearing, and the front sprocket is the biggest that will fit in (15 tooth), while the rear is the smallest that will fit on (34 tooth). Peak power is at 6500rpm, but they go past that in top at about 50mph. If you could manage to raise the gearing then they would easily be quicker than a CG125.

Mine would manage to indicate around 60 on level ground. Never really push bikes down hill (it says more about how steep the hill is rather than how quick the bike is). Not sure how safe they really are at high revs, but I once (by mistake) took mine through the red line (8500rpm) and out the other side, probably to around 9500rpm.

Mine managed to do about 95mpg most of the time, although that was mainly out of town where it was getting thrashed.

Down side of an H100 is as mentioned above, that you can no longer use them for the proper test.

Sometime I will buy an H100 and sort it out, just for old times sake. On the other hand if anyone sees WIJ243 floating round then let me know.

All the best

Keith
