How do you go about starting a forum like this? I want to start a community forum for my town as they have nothing at all where people can come and share ideas, sell their shit, and pass info on about what's happening in the area.

Thought it would be cool to have that facility.

Doesn't have to be exactly like this, but i'd definitely like to know what's involved in making a good, usable forum.

you need something like V Bulletin then a server to host it on
this link allows you to set up a trial site so you can get a look at whats req

I think the accepted format is to create a forum with 400 different categories, no users, then spam the members of similar forums to join up. Don't forget to say that these forums pay the bills, so it isn't spamming.

Wink

For what you want, a fagbook group might be more appropriate.

Something like Proboards or Freeforums will allow you to set up a forum for free. Proboards have quite strict terms of service, Freeforums are a bit more permissive. Both will allow URL forwarding if you want to register a domain name of your own. Have a look and see what you think - there's no need to get involved with servers or hosting and if it doesn't take off, then you've lost nothing but the time invested. Thumbs Up

Fagbook group is what I want to avoid. Can't stand them. I'd much prefer a forum.

I lived in Canada a year in a place called Fernie. It's a very small town, and their forum worked really well. People selling houses, bikes, rental accomodation etc etc. It was really friendly and all local businesses used it to give special offers, info on themed nights etc.

Fagbook would be too limiting.

Thank you for using your google skills there, however Abergavenny is not my home town. I'm renting there at the moment, my home town is in the Amman Valley. I've checked, and they don't have a dedicated forum.

EDIT: Man that's a very unused forum.

Fair enough Smile

Local forums often are unused, Sunderland mainly uses the football one and its a "city".

+1 this. See what I did there? Google+ has a lot of potential, it seems to be quietly gathering more and more momentum and some of its features are fantastic.

I created a small forum for a bunch of musicians - used VBulletin as Oldpink mentioned, with TSO Host as the provider. The setup was easy, and their own help forum is good - https://forums.tsohost.co.uk/

Setting up the forum it's self isn't where the work is.

It's getting people to use it.

BCF started from the nsr125 site forum; the site was a decent repositry of information for the NSR, so a lot of people came to ask questions.

So the obvious start is to get a site that people want to visit.
Useful information, maybe discounts for local shops and services, free adverts (there's so many trying to charge for adverts.)
Make it well designed and easy to use.
